Which Macbook Should I Buy And Should I Pick The M1 Processor
It may not be as attention grabbing as a brushed aluminium case or a stunning screen, but a laptops processor plays a vital role in how fast and efficient it is.
The best load webpages in a flash and power through demanding tasks, such as video editing, whereas a cheap processor could make anything more taxing than online shopping slow your laptop to a crawl.
Apples new SoC M1 processor concentrates everything onto a single chip, unlike the Intel Core i5 and i7 processors in older Macs, which use multiple chips to manage different tasks. SoCs are common in smartphones and tablets, but less so in laptops.
On paper, the M1 is slower than the Core i5 and i7, which both have higher maximum clock speeds. Despite this, Apple makes some bold speed claims for example, that the new MacBook Air should be three times faster when exporting videos from iMovie.
Does it live up to these claims? Below you can see our summary of the specs and promises of these top-tier laptops, or if you join Which? youll be able to access the full reviews to see how they fared.

From the MacBook Pro to the MacBook Air, we’ll help find the best MacBook for your needs
We now recommend every MacBook in Apple’s arsenal, however, major differences between each model mean there isn’t a one-size-fits-all option. At the end of last year, Apple released a new MacBook Air and entry-level MacBook Pro with a custom ARM-based M1 chip, the company’s first in-house SoC . The processor brought massive performance and battery life improvements to Apple’s least expensive laptops, pushing them ahead of their pricier MacBook Pro comrades and even some top Windows 10 rivals.
So what about the MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt 3 ports and the premium 16-inch MacBook Pro? They are still stuck on Intel processors until Apple releases a suitable Apple Silicon chip . Apple is expected to launch new 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro models before the end of the year with in-house M1X chips. We recommend, if possible, waiting for those instead of purchasing the current Intel-powered models. If you don’t need the most premium laptop, the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1 are excellent options.
Our MacBook Air vs MacBook Pro face-off will also help you decide which system is right for you, and our Apple Warranty Check instructions will tell you when your AppleCare+ plan expires. You should also read our macOS Big Sur review to determine whether a Mac is right for you in the first place.
Macbook Air Vs Macbook Pro: Display
The Retina displays in the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro are both sharp and colorful, and while it’s close, there’s a reason to go Pro: brightness.
Based on our lab test results, the MacBook Air maxes out at 365.8 nits of brightness, while the M1 MacBook Pro got even brighter.
On color output, though, they’re more similar. The Air netted a 114.3% sRGB rating from our colorimeter, which slightly beats the 110.6% rating we got from the M1 13-inch Pro.
The new MacBook Pros take display quality to the next level with their Liquid Retina XDR displays. They’re rated for 1,000 nits of brightness and offer mini-LED technology for superior colors and contrast. Plus, you get a 120Hz ProMotion display for smoother performance.

What Is The Best Macbook
From underpowered to one of the fastest ultrathin laptops around, the new MacBook Air with M1 is the best Mac for most people. It takes a familiar design and turbocharges it with record-setting performance and all-day battery life. Along with those speed and endurance boosts, the new M1 chip brings iOS and iPadOS apps to Mac for the first time ever. With M1, there is little reason to skip out on the MacBook Air.
That said, if you need better-sustained performance, you might want to opt for the MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt 3 ports. Where the MacBook Air is fanless, the MacBook Pro has a traditional cooling system so you can run demanding programs for hours without worrying about overheating. Most people will be fine with the Air, but power users should consider stepping up to the Pro. Like the MacBook Air, the MacBook Pro has an incredibly fast SSD and runs on Apple’s gorgeous new Big Sur OS.
What about the Intel-powered MacBooks that weren’t updated to M1 yet? Well, they aren’t completely irrelevant. So far, Apple only refreshed the MacBook Pro with two Thunderbolt 3 ports. If you need an additional pair of inputs, the company still sells the top-tier model with four Thunderbolt 3 connections. Again, it runs on aging Intel chips that don’t get the same performance or endurance as the M1 CPU.

Should I Get A Longer Laptop Warranty
Most laptop makers offer one-year warranties on parts and labor. These standard plans are limited, so they won’t cover accidents that stem from spilling a drink on the keyboard or dropping the system on the sidewalk. Fortunately, your credit-card issuer likely covers such mishaps for a short period of time after you buy a new product, and it also may extend the manufacturer’s warranty. Check your account benefits guide for details.
If your credit-card issuer doesnt cover you, some laptop makers will happily sell you extended warranties. Apple, Dell, HP, and Lenovo all offer wide ranges of extended warranties and coverage for accidental damage. Expect to spend $100 to $300 for these options. Our rule of thumb is that if a warranty costs more than 15 percent of the laptop’s purchase price, you’re better off spending the money on backup drives or services that minimize downtime.
Of course, you can’t put a price tag on peace of mind. There are instances when the logic board or the displaythe most expensive parts of a laptopfail, and while rare, such a catastrophe can cost you half of what the laptop is worth in repair costs.

Apple’s dual-core, entry-level machine
Screen: 13.3-inch 2560 x 1600 Retina LCD | CPU: 1.6GHz dual-core Core i5-8210Y | Storage: 128GB/256GB/512GB/1TB | RAM: 8GB/16GB | Video: Intel UHD Graphics 617 | Weight: 2.7 lbs. | Feats: Touch ID | Ports: Thunderbolt 3
Pricing for the base 2019 MacBook Air starts at $1,099. It packs a 13.3-inch Retina display, 1.6GHz Core i5-8210Y CPU, 8GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. Yeah, we know that price tag is a tough pill to swallow however, cheap MacBook Air deals are fairly easy to find.
Oftentimes, Amazon and Best Buy have the base MacBook Air on sale for $899 or $999. During the holidays, the cheapest MacBook Air price we saw was $799. If the 128GB of storage is too paltry for you, the 256GB MacBook Air is also regularly on sale and normally dips to down to $1,099, which is the cheapest it’s ever been.
In terms of performance, in our Apple MacBook Air 2019 review, the Core i5-8210Y dual-core CPU offers just enough oomph for your day-to-day tasks. We opened up a dozen Chrome tabs and streamed a YouTube video at 1080p simultaneously. The MacBook Air didn’t lag at all.

The Macbook Air: The More Portable Pick
Apple’s smallest laptop is the MacBook Air. It’s a slim, sleek machine that measures 0.63 inch at its thickest point and weighs just 2.8 pounds. The MacBook Air is also Apple’s cheapest laptop, starting at $899 for students and teachers or $999 for the general public. The cheapest and most portable entry point into the macOS ecosystem obviously has enormous appeal.
A low price doesn’t mean the MacBook Air’s screen is low quality, though. Despite the fact that it’s not the highest-resolution 13-inch display you can buy, the LED-backlit panel impresses with its brightness and clarity. The native resolution is 2,560 by 1,600 pixels. The display uses in-plane switching technology, which means that the remarkable picture you see while sitting in front of it doesn’t degrade much if you turn it to show a colleague what you’re working on. Its True Tone feature automatically adapts the color temperature to match ambient lighting conditions, and support for the P3 color gamut means brilliant colors and the ability to perform basic color correcting for photos and videos.
The current version of the MacBook Air sports the same Magic Keyboard you’ll find on the MacBook Pro. It offers a far more comfortable typing experience than previous MacBook Air and MacBook Pro keyboard designs, which suffered from extraordinarily shallow key presses.
Which Type Of Laptop Is Best For You
General laptops: Where the best cheap laptops are found, devices that focus more on practicality than style, portability or power. Thats not to say they cant be fast, but youll typically find a non-Ultrabook clamshell laptop with an HD screen and spinning drive-based storage for less than $600 or £400.
Ultrabooks: Where youll find thin-and-light notebooks sporting SSD storage and display resolutions that exceed 1080p. Paired with powerful, albeit mobile-centric components and especially long battery life, the best Ultrabooks will cost a pretty penny $700 or £500 to $2,000 or £1,800.
2-in-1 laptops: Where notebooks that double as tablets are located. The Surface Book 2 might be a ways off, but many of the best 2-in-1 laptops are available right now. Outfitted with both detachable and 360-degree rotating hinges, these hybrids are the most versatile way to experience Windows 10 on a touchscreen.
Chromebooks: Where youll find the best Chromebooks running Chrome OS. These do much of what Windows and macOS can in the browser, focused on cloud storage over local, while recently getting Android app support for touchscreen models. They generally cost less than $300 or £200 and some can even withstand a slight tussle.

Apple announced a lower-cost version of Apple Music called “Voice Plan.” It costs $4.99 per month, undercutting Spotify. Macbook Air Vs Pro: What Should You Buy
This is a tough call as we need to test and review the new MacBook Pros to come to a verdict. But based on what we know now the MacBook Air is the best MacBook for most people, delivering awesome M1 performance and longer battery life in a fairly portable design.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro is still good, but it’s outshined by the more premium 14-inch MacBook Pro and all of its upgrades. But we’re guessing at least some shoppers will think twice about jumping from $1,299 to $1,999. The 16-inch MacBook Pro is the ultimate splurge machine for power users for those who want the most screen real estate they can have at home and on the go.

Macbook Air Vs Macbook Pro: Keyboard And Touch Bar
All of the MacBooks you can buy offer Apple’s Magic Keyboard, which deliver strong tactile performance and comfort.
The MacBook Air doesn’t feature a Touch Bar, while the 13-inch MacBook Pro does, and this OLED bar frankly doesn’t offer a lot of value. It’s perhaps telling that the 14-inch MacBook Pro and 16-inch MacBook Pro ditch the Touch Bar for a dedicated function row of physical keys.

Apples best MacBook and Macs in 2021
Its amazing how the best MacBooks and Macs somehow pair cutting edge tech with simple yet striking design in the kind of durable build that will ensure years of use. Its no wonder that Apple fans have much higher expectations of Apple devices compared to Windows fans with their machines. Though Macs do cost a little less than they have in the past, they still come with a premium price tag compared to other computers out there. Still, with the value they offer, theyre worth it.
Its not just that top-notch performance and impeccable design that make the best MacBooks and Macs what they are. The software and hardware are integrated much more closely than in other machines, particularly now that OS macOS 11 Big Sur is out, which you can , as well as the impressive M1 chip. And, even though there are some reasons to consider the best Windows PCs and Chromebooks, theres nothing on par with using an Apple device.
Now is a great time to consider looking into an Apple product with all the leaps that Apple has made to its products. Its just the right time as well since Amazon Prime Day is around the corner the sale event is expected in June and many Macs and MacBooks will likely get decent Prime Day discounts.

Should I Consider A Refurbished Laptop
Every manufacturer and reseller has different standards for refurbishing previously used laptops. A slight discount on a rigorously tested MacBook Pro that Apple sells with the same warranty as a new one might be worth the cost savings, while a laptop refurbished by a third party youve never heard could be chancy. Its best to buy any refurbished machine directly from the manufacturers online store as opposed to from a reseller, especially a reseller that may be hawking refurbs from marketplace” sellers or third parties on its platform.
Some of these resellers or their third parties will rate their refurbished stock with a grade. Weve seen refurbished laptops being sold and rated with grades of A, B+, B, C, and so on, to reflect the relative amount of wear and tear on the machine. There is no universal grading system for refurbished PCs, however. Its generally up to the reseller what the grade means, and thus it can vary from seller to seller. Were wary of machines graded this way and strongly recommend insisting on an ironclad return policy in the case of purchases like these, if you decide to roll the dice. You could end up pleasantly surprised, but usually, a refurbished-laptop deal that looks too good to be true…is.
What You Need To Know About Apple Silicon Macs
Starting with the MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro, Apple is embarking on a multi-year journey to replace the Macs typical Intel processors with its own chips, similar to the ones already used in iPhones and iPads. If youve used Macs for a couple of decades, you might remember the last time Apple did this, when it traded PowerPC chips for Intel processors in the mid-2000s.
Apples processors are much faster than the Intel chips they replace, and they allow these new Macs to get significantly better battery life. But there are some wrinkles Apple and Intel processors each use different instruction setsessentially, macOS and the apps you run need to talk to each processor in slightly different ways to get them to do the same things.2 Many apps, including all of Apples software, Google Chrome, and others, have already been updated to work with Apples new chips, which means they can take full advantage of their speed.
But as of early 2021, there are still major apps, including most of Adobes software, productivity apps like Dropbox, and most scientific research and 3D drafting software havent been optimized for Apples chips yet. New Macs can still run almost all of these apps, but macOS needs to translate them so that they can run on the new chips. Apple calls this translation software Rosetta, like the stone. The extra computational effort needed to translate these apps means they run just a bit more slowly than apps that have been optimized for Apple silicon .
