Is Used Worth It
There’s a lot to like about some of the older MacBook Pro models, most specifically the wide range of ports built into the machines. As you get to 2016 through 2018, you’re limited to a few Thunderbolt 3 ports and a keyboard notorious for its problems. From 2019 on, depending on the model, most of the keyboard problems have been resolved.
The Benefits Of Not Buying From Apple
The only real upside of not buying from the Apple Store is that you will almost always save some money. To find the best deal, go to MacPrices.
MacPrices gathers the latest prices from all authorized Apple resellers. This makes it the perfect way to compare prices, check what add-ons you get, discover any uncommon conditions you should be aware of, and whether the seller will charge sales tax on top of the noted price. That last one is important, as it raises your purchase price significantly.
Those add-on bundles can be really enticing. In addition to discounts, retailers might throw in extra hardware or software to sweeten the deal.
Remember, even if you don’t buy from an Apple Store, you’re still eligible for Apple’s warranty and the same benefits, except for a walk-in replacement. You can also purchase AppleCare protection to further solidify that warranty.

Best Refurbished Macbook Pro Deals
Although from time to time Apple drops the price of its MacBooks this is quite a rare occurrence: Apple never really offers discounts on its Mac laptops – other than through its official refurbished store.
Speaking of which, you should pay a visit to the Apple Refurbished Store where you can find cut-price MacBook Pro models. These refurbished models are MacBook Pro laptops that were returned to Apple, perhaps due to a fault, but they are fully reconditioned now and come with a year’s warranty.
Apple is currently offering a refurbished 13in 1.4GHz MacBook Pro for £1,059, for example. This is the May 2020 model, which cost £1,299 before Apple replaced it with the M1 model. Buy it from Apple.
Alternatively a refurbished 2.4GHz MacBook Pro, which was originally released in May 2019 and has 8GB RAM and a 256GB SSD, costs £1,359. When Apple introduced that model it cost £1,799. Buy it from Apple.
Amazon also has a certified refurbished store for Apple products but we would advise against buying any products that are older than five years – most of the products we see on the Amazon refurbished store are unfortunately very old.
Apple Laptops And Notebooks Are Made For Mobility
Apple MacBooks have a unibody aluminum chassis that make them break-resistant during travel. Multiple Thunderbolt ports support both high-speed data and high-definition video for connecting advanced external drives and monitors, while allowing charging of the unit from any side. Similar to most 2-in-1 laptops, Apple laptop notebooks have 802.11ac wireless connectivity, which is backward compatible with all other Wi-Fi® hotspots and networks for continuous connectivity. Built-in Bluetooth® wireless technology helps minimize the cables in your workspace when you pair the computer with a compatible, Mac-friendly Bluetooth printer.

What Should You Check Before Buying A Laptop
Ask yourself the right questions! This will make it easier for you to find the laptop that suits you best and will also help you stay within budget. The most important question to answer is: What are you going to use the laptop for?1. Only for basic tasks 2. For basic tasks + photo editing3. For basic tasks + photo editing + video editing4. For basic + gaming tasksThis is important to know in order to make the best decision in terms of operating system, processor, memory and storage. It is also smart to look at the size and weight of the laptop. Especially if you plan to carry the laptop around a lot.
Understanding Model Year Calculus
One of the more interesting challenges in buying used MacBook Pro machines is understanding which model year you’re buying. When buying a used car, you always want to know its model year, but oddly enough, many Mac resellers seem to gloss over the production year in favor of specs.
There is a huge difference between buying a 16GB MacBook Pro from 2015 and one from 2009.
That said, you need to do a certain amount of OS calculus. According to Apple, the new version of MacOS , which came out in September, supports MacBook Pros and MacBook Airs going back to 2012 and MacBooks going back to 2015. These seem to be the same models that will run with MacOS Mojave, which is the current shipping version of the OS.
You can assume that certain models will drop off the OS support list each year. That’s not to say they won’t be usable, but it does mean that upgrades, special features, and security upgrades won’t be available.
For example, I own one 2011 machine, which I couldn’t upgrade when Mojave came out last year. I have three more 2012 machines, which I can upgrade now but will hit OS obsolescence in later this year when MacOS 11 Big Sur is released. There are hacky ways to bypass Apple’s OS limitation, but they’re still hacks.

Wondering About All The Touch Bar Buzz
Apple made waves with its latest drastic innovation on the MacBook Pro, replacing the traditional function keys with a touch sensitive screen called the Touch Bar, adding versatility and flexibility in terms of usage possibilities. The Touch Bar is intuitive to use and automatically adapts to what you are doing on screen, to show the relevant tools you may need, whether that is a volume rocker while you listen to music or a colour wheel while you edit a photo. Users can interact with the Touch Bar in a variety of ways, with a wide range of accepted gesture controls further simplifying the user experience. Apple has integrated built-in controls for most native apps on the MacBook, with numerous major 3rd party apps offering Touch Bar integration as well. The Touch Bar also houses the fingerprint sensor for Touch ID, to ensure top of the line security and privacy protection. So whether its sending an email, predictive suggestions while typing or formatting a document, the Touch Bar simply makes your life easier.
Design And Use Cases Of Cheap Macs
Another reason why its not exactly fair to look at the Mac mini, iMac, or MacBook price when thinking of the best budget Mac is due to their target audiences being so different.
Mac mini, although the cheapest Mac of the three, is just a core shell that only comes with a power cord in the box. To get Mac mini working properly, youd at least need to add a monitor, a keyboard, and a trackpad . If you have those available or have specific preferences great. If you dont you could spend more of them than buying all-in-one solutions such as iMac or MacBook Air.
iMac starts at just a few hundred dollars more than Mac mini but includes everything you need right out of the box. Unlike Mac mini, its designed for those who want something that just works, are not eager to customize anything, and dont need to carry their computer with them . If you require to be mobile, you might want to look at cheap Apple laptops for sale instead.
MacBook Air is the most affordable and lightweight laptop in the current Apple lineup. It boasts an updated scissor keyboard, 13-inch Retina screen, and timeless design. Its the perfect choice for those who need to stay on the go .
Note that Apple has designed its very own CPU core thats fast and energy efficient, called the M1 chip. This powerful ARM-based processor is currently available on MacBook Air and Mac mini, as well as 13 MacBook Pro.
How do these cheap Mac options compare when it comes to their technical capabilities?

Cheap Macbook Pro Deals: 16
Apple debuted the 16-inch MacBook Pro in November 2019 , just a few months after refreshing the 15-inch MacBook Pro model . It’s currently the largest and most powerful notebook that Apple sells. It boasts a larger 16-inch Retina display surrounded by slimmer bezels, so it’s basically the same dimensions than the 15-inch model, but with extra screen real estate.
Otherwise, the 16-inch MacBook Pro models are equipped with Intel’s 9th-generation 14-nanometer Coffee Lake Refresh chips, which are the same chips that were used in the 15-inch models released earlier the same year.
The entry-level 16-inch MacBook Pro is powered by Intel’s 6-core 2.6GHz Core i7 processor with Turbo Boost up to 4.5GHz, while the higher-end model features Intel’s 2.3GHz 8-core 9th-generation Core i9 processor with 4.8GHz Turbo Boost.
Apple offers two stock configurations cost $2,399 and $2,799 . Both model tiers include Intel’s built-in UHD Graphics 630, alongside either one of two dedicated graphics cards: an AMD Radeon Pro 5300M with 4GB of memory, or an AMD Radeon Pro 5500M with 4GB memory. Both can also be upgraded to an AMD Radeon Pro 5500M GPU with 8GB of memory.
The 16-inch MacBook Pro supports up to 64GB of RAM, which is double the maximum amount of RAM that can be had in the previous 15-inch models. Apple also introduced a new fan design in this model, which allows the laptop to run at a higher power for sustained periods of time.
What You Need To Know
The very first thing you need to be aware of is that Apple updated the 13in MacBook Pro twice in 2020. There are four 13in MacBook Pro models: two were updated in May 2020, and the other two in November 2020.
The other thing you need to know is that the MacBook Pro models that were updated in November now feature Apple’s very own processors, known as the M1 chips. Read about Apple’s M1 MacBook Pro. Plus our review is here: 13in M1 MacBook Pro review.
When they arrived earlier in 2020 the 2.0GHz Intel-powered 13in MacBook Pro models looked like a good buy – but following the arrival of the M1 models they have lost some of their shine. The new entry-level MacBook Pro are now more powerful and more Pro than ever, but the Intel models do offer more RAM and some other benefits. Read our comparison of the 13in MacBook Pro M1 vs Intel to find out how the models compare.
But now as we near the autumn of 2021 it is looking more and more likely that a replacement for the 2.0GHz MacBook Pro model will launch soon. This new model could be a new mid-range MacBook Pro with a new M1X chip from Apple. It may even gain a redesign and a larger 14in display. Read more here: 14in MacBook Pro rumours.
We also think Apple will also release the successor to the 16in MacBook Pro at the same time as the 14in model. So expect a new 16in MacBook Pro this autumn – October is the most likely month. Wondering whether to buy a MacBook Pro now? Read: 16in MacBook Pro: buy now or wait for the new model?

Technical Stuff To Think About When Shopping For A Cheap Macbook
Theres a lot of technical specs that we can get into but lets stick to the basics. A general rule of thumb is that the newer the MacBook, the faster its processors. If youre an average user, you really dont need to worry about this.
One importantand often forgottentechnical aspect which I think deserves more attention than it usually gets is screen resolution. If youre planning to just plug your MacBook up to a larger monitor, then maybe you dont need to worry about this, but if you do plan on using your laptops built-in screen, then listen to the following words: GET A MACBOOK WITH A RETINA DISPLAY.
Why is this such a big deal? Well, if youre planning on staring at that little screen for over 8 hours a day, you want it to be as sharp as possible. Trust me, it makes a difference with workflow. The 2012 MacBook Pro was the first in the Pro series with a Retina displaynow all of them have it as a standardbut watch out when buying a MacBook Air. The Air series only started coming equipped with a Retina display in 2018.
So, remember, if you plan to spend long hours staring at your MacBook, the Retina display is for you.
