Output Voltage Must Match

What To Do If Your Laptop Is Plugged In But Not Charging

The output voltage provided by;your power supply needs to;match. There is absolutely no substitute;for that.

If your computer needs 19.5 volts, or the prior power supply provided 19.5 volts, then your power supply must be 19.5 volts. Period.

Normally, if youve got the same kind of power supply;from the same manufacturer and it can plug in at all , voltage isnt something you have to worry about. Ive;used different versions of Dell power supplies across a number of different;Dell machines.

But regardless of the source or the computers involved, the voltage output by the power supply the number associated with V must;match the voltage expected by the computer youre plugging it into. If youve got an existing power supply youre replacing, you can read the output voltage from its label.

Why Is My Hp Laptop Charger Not Working

Whenever you connect the HP laptop charger to your PC, your desktop should display a notification that your device is charging. You can find that notification at the bottom right of your screen.

Before you assume that your HP laptop charger is faulty, check the battery of your laptop. Sometimes, the charger is not the one at fault. The battery is unable to recharge or store energy properly. If this is the case, youll need to replace the laptop battery, not the charger.

You should also check if the outlet is working properly. A faulty outlet will prevent your laptop from charging.

If you find that the batterys doing fine after doing the appropriate HP diagnostics , you should turn your attention to the devices power adapter. If the HP laptop charger isnt working, it may be due to one or more of the following reasons:

  • Old Laptop Charger HP laptop chargers, wear down over time just like the other components of your laptop.
  • Faulty Adapter Cable Sometimes, the cable isnt providing enough power or charge to your laptop.
  • Power Supply Issues The power supply for your HP laptop charger may have failed. You can test this by borrowing a charger of the same model and checking if the laptop is charging with that borrowed device.
  • Power Cord Failure The elements in your HP laptop charger cord may have a problem, such as a loose connector. This prevents the battery from charging properly.

Locate Your Laptop Model And Brand

You already know the brand of your laptop, but locating the specific model number can be helpful in determining which charger you’ll need. In most cases, the model number will be displayed on a label on the bottom of the laptop. The information is usually printed directly on the inside of the battery compartment, too. Before checking the battery compartment, power down your laptop first and unplug the power cord. Once you’ve found your laptop model and brand, enter the information in our laptop charger finder to see compatible laptop charger replacements.

Zozo 90w Ac Universal Laptop Charger

I

The ZOZO 90W AC Universal Laptop Charger consists of two primary components. The first is a 10-foot power cord, which plugs into any 2-prong AC outlet. The other end of this cord plugs into a black plastic power supply. This supply is just over 5 inches long and 2 inches wide, and is easy to carry along with your laptop. From the other end of the power supply, a secondary cord runs to your laptop. Near this end, youll notice a green LED indicator, which lets you know when the power supply is active.

The far end of the smaller cord ends in a 3-pin tip which connects to any one of 16 different tips. The neat thing about this design is that each tip comes with automatic voltage adjustment. In other words, when you attach a tip, the charger will automatically adjust the voltage to match. You dont have to mess around with any switches, buttons, or other shenanigans. Another thing we should point out is that the connection to the tips is flattened on one side. This ensures that you attach the 3-pin connector in the correct orientation. Finally, theres a small velcro strap attached to the DC cord. Its not much, but its a nice extra touch when youre transporting your charger.

Find A Compatible Laptop Adapter

Look for the compatibility lists in descriptions of laptop adapters you are looking at. Sometimes the compatible laptop models are listed in the product description or in a separate list. Laptop model numbers can often look similar, so make sure the model numbers match exactly. Laptop adapter and power cord product descriptions typically list the manufacturer, part number and a partial description as well. If you find an adapter with the correct output voltage, but the wrong port connector, you may be able to find port attachments that will adapt the connector to the power port on your laptop.

What If Watts Or Amps Are Less

If you use an under-powered power supply one that cannot provide the number of watts or amps that your laptop might require results are unpredictable.

While rare, it is possible you could damage the laptop, or even the power supply itself.

More commonly, your laptop simply wont charge, or wont charge as quickly.

Some years ago I had;one of the;higher end, more powerful Dell;laptops. I had the opposite;scenario of yours. It came with a 130-watt power supply, but;I also had a;65-watt power supply.

This machine would, of course,;work properly with a 130-watt power supply. But, if I connected a 65-watt;power supply instead, the laptop would actually tell me at boot-up, The power supply;thats connected isnt powerful enough. I may not be able to recharge; I may;only be able to recharge at a very slow rate.

So in my case, the laptop was able to;detect that I had put in a power supply that;wasnt really strong enough. In my experience, most laptops arent as informative.

Choose Correct Power Adapter For Laptop

Welcome to TPS Tech blogs. This is Sharath. Today, I will talk about “choosing right power adapter for your laptop”. Common questions our customers ask us on this topic are like:

  • How to choose right power adapter?
  • Shall I buy original or its compatible one?
  • Would it work?
  • Where to purchase?
  • Would it affect the warranty?

Let me attempt to help here. My approach is similar for all laptop vendors – Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, Acer – you name it. Basics first: Laptops rely on two main types of power adapters for energy: the AC adapter and the DC Adapter. These adapters, also known as chargers, are what help convert the electricity from the wall outlet into a form that’s usable for the laptop. Some important factors to consider:

  • Watt
  • Ampere
  • Connector Pin type

The voltage and wattage of an adapter needs to match the required voltage of the laptop. Watts is important as it is the core foundation power that laptop supports. The image below shows different power adapters categorised based on Watts. Needless to say that watts and pin sizes are bound to change in future as the industry standards evolve. Yes we will blog them as well! 🙂

On Plugs Sockets And Polarity

DOUBLE your Laptop Battery Life with External Power – Mophie Showcase

Particularly when you use;a power supply from a different vendor, its critical that the polarity be correct. The connections have positive and negative wires, and those must match what your laptop expects, or you can do damage.

Among;that jumble of logos and small print on the power supply label, there is typically a diagram that indicates polarity.

This must match what your computer expects. Unfortunately, while there are generally accepted standards for labeling power supplies, theres no equivalent for the laptop or computer itself. Look for similar information, either on the computer case or in the computers documentation.

But if youre not sure, dont try until you have someone knowledgable look at it.

The other way to determine what your computer requires;is to;look at any power supply you already have that works, like the one it came with. For example, if both of your machines are;Dell laptops, as long as they use the same kind of power connector , theyll be polarized the same way. In Dells case, that means the positive lead is in the center and the negative lead;is the outside of the connector.

Check The Connection Between The Laptop And The Charger

The HP laptop charger should fit firmly in the DC jack without you having to wiggle the cable just to get things charging. If the charger cable seems loose, hold it in place using electrical tape. This way, the laptop battery can receive power from the charger.

Note: this is a temporary fix. A loose connection can worsen over time. So, have your laptop sent to a specialist for a more technical assessment of the problem.

Detach And Reattach The Laptop Battery

Begin by turning off your laptop. Then, flip it upside down. Look for the latch that secures the battery.

Open the latch properly. The battery should pop out. If it doesnt, give it a gentle tug.

Next, clean the connectors of the laptop battery by applying a tiny amount of rubbing alcohol to the tip of the connection swab. Dirt and other debris can accumulate and interfere with the connection, giving the impression of a faulty HP laptop charger.

Let the alcohol dry before you reattach the battery. Put the latch back on, secure it and plug in the power cord to check if the laptop will charge.

Volts And Amps Combine To Confuse

Bring MagSafe to Your Retina MacBook with Griffin’s BreakSafe USB C Power Cable

by Leo A. Notenboom

Yes with a couple of caveats, of course.

If its not made specifically for your particular computer, getting the right power supply is important and involves matching voltage, amperage, and polarity.

Each has different constraints.

In general, for power supplies or chargers:

  • The output voltage must match.
  • The output amperage must match or be greater than that required.
  • The polarity of the output connection must be correct.

The input line voltage must be supported but is unrelated to compatibility with the device being charged or powered.
