Best Chromebooks Under $500
|Tested battery life:||11.5 hours|
Why we like this one: If you want a larger screen and a number pad, we recommend the Asus Chromebook Flip C536 . Its vibrant, 15.6-inch touchscreen provides more room to get work done or enjoy media, and the number pad is useful if you input a lot of data. The Flip C536s backlit keys and extra-wide trackpad feel satisfying and responsive. But even though the C536 will last a long time away from an outlet, its too large and heavy to carry around on a regular basis.
Where it falls short: The 15-inch display makes the Flip C536 heavier and bulkier, so its much less portable than our other pickswe dont recommend it if you need a laptop to take to work, class, or even a coffee shop. For some reason the C536 has a 360-degree hinge, but its way too weighty to flip around and use comfortably in other modes.

The BNPL plan is an excellent option for the average consumer. Money is one of the scarce resources today. Besides, its a handy program for those who want the best deals and bargains available on a limited timeframe.
Apple Macbook Air M1 2020
This is our go-to recommendation for those in search of a MacOS laptop for everyday basic use. The MacBook Air was updated in the first half of 2020 with new Intel processors and, most importantly, a new keyboard. However, in November, Apple announced its new homegrown M1 processors would be replacing Intel’s CPUs in the Air. Using Apple’s M1, the company promises an operating system with better performance and longer battery life — up to 18 hours. The Intel-based models will still be around, though, and regardless of which chip is running the Air, you’re getting a great little Mac laptop starting at $999.
But Are Cheap Laptops Worth It
You know the old saying: You get what you pay for. But thanks to the technology boom of the last few decades, a cheap laptop can actually take you pretty far and won’t break down immediately. It’s all about knowing which one to select.
Rather than just making a few purchase suggestions and sending you on your way, we’re going to equip you with some knowledge that’ll help you be a more informed laptop shopper. You know all that computer jargon of processor-this and gigahertz-that we’ll explain it all in terms that anyone can understand.

- Only one USB port and no headphone jack
- Cramped keyboard
In The Modern World Keeping Up Appearances
For a highly affordable laptop, the Modern 14 looks pretty classy. Its nothing out of the ordinary, but the overall style is nice, if simple. A charcoal-metallic paint job covers the whole chassis, sparkling with just a little flair when it catches the light. The body is aluminum, though the paint job on our sample hides the fact that’s a nice change from the plasti-chassis norm in this price range. The keys are also rimmed white and even feature white backlighting, which adds a bit more perkiness.
The tight, compact design also helps the overall look. The Modern 14 measures 0.7 by 12.6 by 8.6 inches and weighs 2.8 pounds. Thats about as thick as the Asus VivoBook 15 we reviewed recently, but about a pound lighter, due in part to the smaller screen size. That’s in line with much more expensive ultraportables.
Speaking of the screen size, this 14-inch display features a full HD resolution . The screen is not a standout, but its clear and bright, so theres no room for complaints. The IPS panel has good off-axis viewing angles, too, without much distortion or darkening when seen from an angle. This is more or less the screen you should expect in a laptop at this price, and perhaps a bit better than that.

Best Win 10 Ultracompact Around $200
- SD card slot for storage expansion
- Only 32GB of internal storage inhibits app installs
- 1,366-by-768-pixel screen makes text fuzzy
- Poor camera quality
Gone are the days when a decent laptop would cost you north of $1,000. It’s now possible to pick up a full-size or ultraportable Windows 11 notebook with a processor powerful enough for use at home, school, or work, for $500 or less. It’s also possible to find full-featured Chromebooks and hybrid systems that give you both laptop and tablet functionality in one device for less than that.
You should be prepared to compromise in one aspect or other, however. While it’s certainly possible to find a powerful laptop with a 15-inch screen, you might have to make do with a flimsy keyboard and touchpad. Likewise, you could buy an impeccably made ultraportable that uses a modest CPU and a small storage drive to achieve its low price. Understanding those trade-offs, and matching up a budget laptop’s strengths and weaknesses with what you will do with it, is the key to making a happy purchase. Here’s help.
The Best Laptop Under $500
If youre looking for an absurdly cheap Chromebook that absolutely gets the job done, you should definitely be looking at the $260 Lenovo Chromebook Duet. The Duet is a 10-inch aluminum alloy Chrome OS tablet that comes with a kickstand and keyboard cover. It looks sturdy and classy, and it can easily function as either a tablet or a PC. But youre not compromising too much on performance for this devices tiny size as long as youre not running dozens of tabs and apps, you should be fine. And we got over 11 hours of battery life in our testing, making it one of the longest-lasting Chromebooks weve seen in the past year.
The main thing to know about the Chromebook Duet is that the screen is quite small just 10.1 inches. Thats a fine size for a young student and for an adults secondary device for note-taking, Netflixing, and the like, but its not an ideal size for a primary work device unless youre fine with quite a bit of squinting.

The Best Laptop Under $800
If youre looking for a budget Windows laptop thats thinner and lighter than the Envy x360 while delivering similar category-topping performance, the $669 HP Pavilion Aero 13 is a good choice for you. It has a powerful eight-core Ryzen processor, which is one of the fastest processors for thin and light laptops that you can get. Not only does it perform well, but its also unbelievably light at just 2.1 pounds, and it comes with a blindingly bright 16:10 screen. Its a standout in battery life, too I averaged almost 11 hours of continuous work.
HP did have to cut a few corners to achieve those benefits at this price point. The audio on our model wasnt great, and the device shipped with some cheap bloatware installed. But the Pavilion Aero 13 is excellent in almost every other way, and it wont disappoint if youre looking for a functional, cheap Windows PC.
What Am I Losing By Getting A Cheap Laptop
Laptops in the $600-or-below price range are not going to be good for PC gaming. You wont get a 4K resolution display or a refresh rate higher than 60Hz. RAM is going to max out around 8GB, which isnt bad but also isnt spectacular. Youre also unlikely to get more than 500GB of storage space.
In this price range, laptops are going to be best for web browsing, word processing, Zoom calls, and streaming. As long as you dont expect more than that, youll be fine.

Can I Install Linux On A Chromebook
Of course, you can. You can install various Linux command-line tools, Integrated development environments, code editors, etc., on your Chromebook to write code, develop apps, create software and do much more. However, Linux isnt officially supported as an OS by Google for Chromebooks. Thats because installing Linux requires that you put your device into the Developer Mode to give you full write access to the Chrome OS. By keeping these files outside the normal access, Google ensures the Chromebooks security and integrity of the OS.
Acer Chromebook Spin 713
Tired of trying to work on documents or spreadsheets on a small widescreen display? The Acer Chromebook Spin 713 uses one of Acer’s bright VertiView displays, a 13.5-inch 2,256×1,504-pixel touchscreen with a 3:2 aspect ratio. As the name implies, it gives you more vertical room to work, but it still has the width of a typical 13.3-inch laptop with a 16:9 ratio. Between that and its battery life, which lasted nearly 13 hours in our tests, you’ll be able to get more work done in a day with this Chrome OS laptop — and it’s still thin and light enough for an everyday carry.
The latest version of this Chromebook is the first to receive Intel’s Evo verification, which means you’ll be getting the best possible mobile experience with this model. It’s also the first with Thunderbolt 4 support, which lets you connect to multiple external displays as well as providing fast data speeds and networking.

How To Find A Good Laptop
If your budget is tight and you want the most bang for your buck, or you just want to keep something out of the landfill, the used or refurbished laptop market is worth considering. I’ve had great luck buying used laptops on eBay from all sorts of sellers .
To score the best deal, make sure you know the market. Do some research to figure out a machine that suits your needs. The easiest to come by, and therefore the best deals, tend to be on more boring, business-oriented models. I happen to like ThinkPads, which are used byand then dumped all at once bylarge corporations, which means there are lots to choose from, and they’re cheap.
Aim for these specs: Try to get a laptop with at least a ninth-generation Intel Core i3 processor, 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage , and at least a 13-inch display that’s close to HD.
Finding used laptops on eBay: Once you know what you want, search for it on eBay. Scroll down and check the option to show only “sold listings.” Now take the 10 most recent sales, add up the prices, and divide by 10. That’s the average price don’t pay more than that.
Keep the lowest price in mindthat’s the great deal price. Now, uncheck the Sold Listing option. See what’s between the lowest price and that average price. Those are the deals you can consider. I suggest watching a few. Don’t bid or participate at all. Just watch them until the end and see how high the auctions end up going.

What A Bit More Money Gets You
If you can spend a little more than $500, you should do soyou can buy a significantly better laptop that will feel better to use and last years longer.
The Acer Swift 3 SF314-42-R0HP and the identical SF314-42-R7LH are uncommonly good laptops for their prices of around $580 to $630. The Swift 3 is compact, weighs just 2.65 pounds, and its battery lasted about 10.5 hours in our tests. Compared to most thin-and-light ultrabooks, the Swift 3 feels cheap, but unlike almost every other laptop in this budget price range, the Swift 3 meets our performance, battery life, and weight requirements, and has no dealbreaking flaws.
The Lenovo Ideapad Flex 5 14ITL053 is another decent option for the price. But because it has a dim screen with a yellowish cast, we only recommend it if its on sale for less than the Swift 3. Otherwise, youre better off saving up a bit more for the lighter, more compact Yoga 7i , which also has a better display.
The next step up from this category is our budget ultrabook pick, the Lenovo Yoga 7i , which costs a few hundred dollars more but has the specs and build quality to last you a few years, as well as the battery life to run all day.
The iPad is plenty powerful for most people, but if you want a bigger screen on your tablet for multitasking and a faster processor, consider the iPad Air. But it starts at $600, and youll have to spend more on a keyboard and a case to go with it.
How To Choose The Best Laptops Under $500 For You
Choosing the best laptop under $500 for you really depends on where you are at with your budget. Our top performers, the Acer Aspire E 15 and the Acer Aspire 5, typically range around $300 to $400, so you wont even need to expand your budget to $500. Even if these laptops are slightly out of budget right now, you should consider saving if you can, as they boast Intel Core i3 processors, which you wont find in most laptops under $500.
However, if you dont mind using the ChromeOS, it might be best for you to use a Chromebook. Here me out. Its cheap, and since the operating system is stripped down, it will perform better than your average Windows 10 laptop for the same price. Laptops like the HP Chromebook 15, HP Chromebook x2 and Samsung Chromebook 4 are examples of great chromebooks you can buy under $500.

If youre a student, or a parent of a student, you know that having a laptop isnt optional. Given all of the expenses involved with attending university, however, most folks cant afford to take a skys-the-limit approach when buying a laptop for school. This prompts a lot of people to ask, Do I really need to spend thousands to get a good laptop? Thankfully, the answer is no.
