You can connect your PC or laptop to the internet through a Wi-Fi connection if you have a wireless router connected to broadband internet and an operating system that fully supports wireless networking, such as Windows 8, 10 or 11.
If your wireless router was professionally installed by an internet service provider, chances are it’s already been set up with an SSID and password encryption. In such a case, you can most likely skip straight to the final step. If you’re installing it yourself, you can proceed with the guide as normal. Here’s what to do:
- In Windows 7 or Windows 8.1, select Start, start typing Network and Sharing Center, and then choose it in the list.
- In Windows 10, select Start, then select Settings/Network & Internet/Status/Network and Sharing Center.
- In Windows 11, select Start, type Control Panel, then select Control Panel/Network and Internet/ Network and Sharing Center.

How To Connect Mobile Internet To A Pc With Usb Tethering
Mobile phones have long had a modem feature, allowing you to hook up the device to your computer via USB. This lets you share the mobile internet connection over a wired connection with your laptop or other devices.
It is easy to do. Connect the USB cable that shipped with your phone to your computer, then plug it into the phone’s USB port. Next, to configure your Android device for sharing mobile internet:
a) Open Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering.
b) Tap the USB tethering slider to enable it. If this appears grayed out, make sure the USB cable is properly connected on both ends.
c) The Hotspot & tethering warning will appear, informing you that continuing will interrupt any existing data transfers between your phone and PC.
d) Tap OK to proceed.
A notification icon should appear to confirm that tethering is active. In testing, we found the following results:
- Speed: 97Mbps download, 2.02Mbps upload, with an average ping of 66ms.
- Battery Impact: The effect on your phone’s battery depends on whether your laptop is plugged in or not. If it is, battery decrease should be slow to non-existent, as the phone will slowly charge through the USB connection.
Note: If your computer is running on its battery, your phone will potentially drain the computer’s battery, rather than its own.
Next week I will discuss Bluetooth tethering and how to connect a Wi-Fi hotspot to your pc.

How To Share Your Internet In Windows Via Wi

So lets say your PC has a cellular connection and your friends laptop doesnt or perhaps you have a desktop thats connected via Ethernet but you need to get your tablet online and theres no router. Turning your WIndows PC into a mobile hotspot for other devices is quite easy.
1. Navigate to the Mobile Hotspot settings menu. You can get there by typing Mobile Hotspot into the Windows search box.
2. Toggle Share my Internet connection to on.
3. Select the source of your Internet connection if its not already chosen by default. Chances are that, unless you have more than one Internet connection at once, the menu will show the correct source on its own.
4. Select Wi-Fi on the Share my Internet connection over menu if its not already selected.. Bluetooth is way too slow.
5. under Network band.
6. Set the Network name, password and network band. This will be the SSID and password that your client devices need to connect. Note that, if you are sharing a 5-GHz Wi-Fi connection, your client devices will need to support 5 GHz also. Some older devices such as Raspberry Pi 3s and Zeros can only do 2.4 GHz
You should now be able to connect to your WIndows 10 PC from other devices, just like it was any other hotspot. However, when I tried this the first time, I got an error on my client device saying failed to obtain IP address. Perhaps that was because I had shared my connection over Ethernet previously. Whatever the reason, heres how to fix it.
