The Best Cheap Laptop Ofof 2021
HPs Envy x360 13, currently available for $860 is the best budget laptop you can buy under $800. With a high-quality and sturdy convertible build, it looks like a device that should cost twice its price. It has plenty of other great features as well, including a really excellent keyboard and a bright, colorful screen. Its also exceptional on the inside. Thanks to its AMD Ryzen processor, the system delivers all-day battery life and very smooth performance it can even handle some light gaming.
We have some minor complaints about the Envy, of course. The screen is 16:9, which is a cramped aspect ratio for multitasking. Our test unit had a somewhat limited port selection and came with some bloatware preinstalled. But none of these are deal-breakers at the Envys price point. Overall, budget shoppers will want for very little with this machine.

We like: Thin and light
We didnt like: Not many ports
A 15.6-inch laptop with a flexible hinge that lets you flip the screen all the way around to turn the laptop into a large tablet, or prop the device up so the screen is front and centre.
But be under no illusions that this is simply a large tablet with a keyboard its a fully fledged laptop with a good spec for getting everyday tasks done in a flash.

Testing The Modern 1: Just Enough Pep To Stay Current
The parts that make this laptop tick are modest, which is to be expected. The goal here is a working everyday laptop for home and light office tasks, and to that end, the system packs an Intel Core i3-10110U processor, 8GB of memory, and a 128GB SSD. The processor is a humble two-core, four-thread chip that doesnt chew up much energy, but it should have enough pep for simple multitasking. That 128GB of storage is definitely a bit restrictive, but for documents and a moderate number of photos and videos, it will do.
To measure this machines performance, were going to run it through our usual suite of benchmark tests and compare the results to the competition. You can find the names and specs of these competitors in the following table…
These are all inexpensive machines, as well, falling right in the same price range . The Asus Laptop L410 is the least expensive , with a low-power Intel Celeron CPU and just 4GB of memory and 64GB of storage. The VivoBook 15 is similar to the Modern 14 in terms of components, but of course with a larger 15-inch screen . The Dell Inspiron 15 3000 is another 15-inch laptop, priced at $369 as tested. Finally, the Asus Vivobook 17 M712 is a bit more expensive , and one of our top picks for any budget laptop, albeit with a giant 17.3-inch screen.
Cheap Laptops: Spotting The Best Laptop Deals Under $200
One of the first things we often check when shopping for cheap laptops is the amount of storage on offer. As shoppers, we’ve become accustomed to comparing prices and models based on the number of gigabytes next to the model name. However, there may be more to it than that, especially when you’re browsing the cheaper shelves. You may also need to pay attention to your operating system when picking up a budget laptop deal under $200.
Some cheap laptops are more worthy of your cash than others, and many simply need to be avoided. For example, you’ll easily find a Windows machine that offers just 16 or 32GB of storage, but with update file and software sizes increasing, you may quickly find that insufficient. However, finding a Chromebook with 16 or 32GB of storage for under $200 makes for a great cheap laptop deal. That’s because these machines run on Chrome OS which doesn’t require updates and operates largely through your browser.
Similarly, a lot of laptops hold incredibly low price tags because they are labelled as ‘FreeDOS’. This means they don’t have an operating system on them already, so you will need to buy Windows 10 to get them set up.

The Best Cheap Laptop With A Stylus
If you like the Duets size and detachable form factor but are willing to spend on something a bit more upscale, you may find the Asus Chromebook Detachable CM3 to be a better choice. Like the Duet, the CM3 is a 10.5-inch 16:10 Chrome OS tablet with a fabric cover, kickstand, and detachable screen. But the CM3s kickstand folds multiple ways: you can crease it lengthwise to stand the tablet up like a laptop or fold it the short way and stand the tablet up horizontally. Plus, it comes with a built-in USI stylus and roomy keys with a surprising amount of travel. Battery life was also quite impressive: we averaged close to 13 hours of continuous work.
Where the CM3 lags a bit behind the Duet is the power. Its MediaTek processor can be a bit sluggish compared to more pricier offerings. But the CM3 still offers a surprising number of perks for its sub-$400 price and makes a great student driver or secondary device.
Is $350 The Right Price Point For You
Don’t be under the illusion that $350 is going to buy you a monster system that can do everything. It’s not. If you are looking for a system that can handle things like photo and video editing, or a gaming system, then you are looking in the wrong place.
But, if you are looking for a basic system capable of browsing the web , or doing word processing and spreadsheets, then these are the systems for you.
Don’t Miss: Msi Keyboard Lights Not Working
The Best Laptop Under $800
If youre looking for a budget Windows laptop thats thinner and lighter than the Envy x360 while delivering similar category-topping performance, the $669 HP Pavilion Aero 13 is a good choice for you. It has a powerful eight-core Ryzen processor, which is one of the fastest processors for thin and light laptops that you can get. Not only does it perform well, but its also unbelievably light at just 2.1 pounds, and it comes with a blindingly bright 16:10 screen. Its a standout in battery life, too I averaged almost 11 hours of continuous work.
HP did have to cut a few corners to achieve those benefits at this price point. The audio on our model wasnt great, and the device shipped with some cheap bloatware installed. But the Pavilion Aero 13 is excellent in almost every other way, and it wont disappoint if youre looking for a functional, cheap Windows PC.
Microsoft Surface Laptop Go: The Best Cheap Laptop From Microsoft
Price: £549 |
If you’re after a premium-brand laptop at an affordable price, it’s hard to beat the base model of the Surface Laptop Go. For a reasonable price of £549, you’ll get a laptop powered by a tenth-gen Intel Core i5 processor featuring a beautiful PixelSense display with a resolution of 1,536 x 1,034px. It does only come with 4GB RAM and 64GB SSD however, so is best suited to those wanting a cloud computing device rather than a laptop for storing thousands of files and running large applications.
Weighing just 1.1kg and measuring 278 x 206 x 15.7mm when closed, the Surface Laptop Go is extremely portable but the 12.4in screen feels a lot more spacious than its dimensions would have you believe owing to its 3:2 aspect ratio. The keyboard is a delight to type on and you have a choice of USB-A and USB-C ports, which is very welcome.
When treated like a Chromebook rather than a full-blown Windows 10 machine, the base specification Surface Laptop Go is undoubtedly one of our favourite laptops around the £500 mark.

Microsoft Surface Go 2
Before we get to the official used recommendations, theres a decent argument to be made for Microsofts Surface Go 2. Its technically not an older laptop as its the last budget Surface tablet Microsoft has made, but its still been around for over a year and the price has dropped a bit.
However, in my humble opinion, its not quite the best overall tablet for the price because of its cramped screen and very weak performance with the lower end Pentium/eMMC storage configs, but if you are looking for a cheap secondary Windows convertible, you can do a lot worse. Just be aware of the specs and follow the buying tips below, because your experience with this tablet will vary greatly depending on which configuration you buy. Check out eBay to see if you can snag a good enough deal.
Update: Theres a more recent Surface Go 3 available in the meantime. Its merely a hardware bump of the Go 2, but with a noticeable performance improvement on the base-level Intel Pentium configurations. However, if youre shopping for the better specs in this tiny format, Id still consider going with the Go 2 instead, especially if you can find it discounted.
- m3/i3 CPU confogurations necessary for more than basic use
- slow eMMC storage
- Difficult to use on lap
If you can find a good deal on a Surface Go with keyboard and 8 GB of RAM, it could make an excellent secondary or tertiary Windows machine.

Limitations You Can Live With
Naturally, a budget laptop is one thats more affordable than cutting-edge machines, and in the majority of cases, a lower price means less-powerful internal hardware. Thats not a bad thing. For example, if you spend most of your computer time browsing the web or watching movies, chances are you dont need the latest-generation processor or an ultra-powerful video card. You can save a lot of money by finding a budget laptop that makes reasonable compromises.
As youre shopping for budget laptops, consider the most common hardware compromises youll encounter.
- Video hardware: Most budget laptops either use underpowered graphics processing units , or they power their video by sharing resources with the main processor . In these cases, video on the laptop will be adequate, but thats about it. Watching Netflix will be fine, but your laptop will struggle with more intense video tasks such as playing video games and editing videos.
“If youre thinking about buying a budget laptop with an 11-inch screen, make sure the diminutive size isnt too small for your hands. Some users complain that there isnt enough room to comfortably type on the corresponding keyboard. “

The best laptops under $500 won’t leave you unsettled because you didn’t pay a premium price. There are value-priced notebooks that include full-HD displays, solid performance and long battery life, plus all the ports you need. You can even get a laptop with a touch screen in this price range, though it will be on the smaller side. Some of these even made it on our best laptops page.
- And here are the best cheap laptop deals today
After reviewing dozens of value-priced systems, the best laptops under $500 with a Windows 10 operating system are the 15-inch Acer Aspire E 15 and the Acer Aspire 5. We even wrote a face-off comparing the Acer Aspire E15 vs. Acer Aspire 5 to help you choose between the two. Meanwhile, the best Chromebooks under $500 that youll find are the HP Chromebook 15 and HP Chromebook x2. We recently reviewed the new Acer Swift 3, which starts at $499, but it didn’t perform well enough to make this list due to its mediocre battery life. We also reviewed the HP Pavilion 14 , which is just under $500. Check out our best cheap laptop deals. Also, check out our Apple iPad mini 6 review , which starts at $499. Keep in mind that youre still going to have to make some compromises when youre looking for a laptop at this price. If you’re looking for something for your kid, check our best kids tablets page.
What Specs Should My Child’s Laptop Have
The final consideration is how your kids will use the laptop, which in turn determines the processor, storage, and memory configurations you should select. Tasks such as taking notes, writing papers, or making PowerPoint slides require little more than the bare minimum, which means that an Intel Celeron or Pentium processor will suffice a few budget Chromebook models now also use AMD or MediaTek mobile processors. These collectively are the lowest performance tier in budget laptops.
The next step up is an Intel Core i3, which you should consider if your kid’s teachers regularly have them stream online educational videos. An Intel Core i5 or i7 is all but impossible to find on a laptop or Chromebook that costs about $300.
If you opt for a more powerful processor so your kids can stream videos, you might also want to consider a 2-in-1 convertible or detachable laptop, which can double as a tablet thanks to a hinge that rotates 360 degrees, or a screen that detaches completely from the keyboard base. Most hybrids and convertibles are more expensive than the price range we’ve discussed to this point, but you can find a few high-quality models for less than $500. These are best for middle-school-age children or older, since these machines are by nature less durable than a conventional laptop.

How To Find A Good Laptop
If your budget is tight and you want the most bang for your buck, or you just want to keep something out of the landfill, the used or refurbished laptop market is worth considering. I’ve had great luck buying used laptops on eBay from all sorts of sellers .
To score the best deal, make sure you know the market. Do some research to figure out a machine that suits your needs. The easiest to come by, and therefore the best deals, tend to be on more boring, business-oriented models. I happen to like ThinkPads, which are used byand then dumped all at once bylarge corporations, which means there are lots to choose from, and they’re cheap.
Aim for these specs: Try to get a laptop with at least a ninth-generation Intel Core i3 processor, 8 GB of RAM, 128 GB of storage , and at least a 13-inch display that’s close to HD.
Finding used laptops on eBay: Once you know what you want, search for it on eBay. Scroll down and check the option to show only “sold listings.” Now take the 10 most recent sales, add up the prices, and divide by 10. That’s the average price don’t pay more than that.
Keep the lowest price in mindthat’s the great deal price. Now, uncheck the Sold Listing option. See what’s between the lowest price and that average price. Those are the deals you can consider. I suggest watching a few. Don’t bid or participate at all. Just watch them until the end and see how high the auctions end up going.
