Serious Gaming For Less Than A Grand

With an angular, black-and-red design, the Asus TUF Gaming FX504G doesn’t stray far from the gaming-laptop ordinary. The color scheme is practically a uniform for machines like this, and the overall look telegraphs “typical gaming laptop” in its size and shape.

The all-plastic chassis is what’s expected of a gaming laptop in this price range, as is the plastic touchpad. Unlike on some gaming machines these days from Dell, Gigabyte, and others, the display is nowhere close to bezel-less. It’s bordered by wide, 1-inch-thick sections of the same plastic that envelops the rest of the machine. The main bit of unique flair: The two forward corners of the chassis and lid are cut off at a diagonal, rather than the right angles or rounded corners you see on most laptops.

Storage: Ssds Rule But A Mix Is Better

Get a GeForce GTX 1650 laptop for just $450 in this HP ...

You’ll see both ordinary hard drives and swifter solid-state drives in under-$1,000 laptops. The occasional 15.6-inch-screen model might offer a small-capacity SSD boot drive alongside a secondary-storage platter hard drive, though this is more common with 17-inch laptops.

Opt for this dual-drive approach if you can find it and afford it. The smaller SSD would be home to the operating system and a few favorite games, and the larger, more economical hard drive would host the rest of your games and other programs that don’t need quick loading times. Some budget gaming laptops let you add the second drive yourself inside an empty internal 2.5-inch bay. That can be the most economical choice, as 2.5-inch hard drives of significant capacity can be had for well less than $100.

In a gaming laptop, an SSD plus a hard drive is the best of both storage worlds. This is especially recommended given how large modern game installations have become, ballooning over 100GB at times. Your small SSD will fill up quickly. In terms of gaming performance, the storage subsystem affects game load times and in-game level changes. It can be of special importance in MMORPGs, where huge environments are loaded in real time. Thus, having at least some fast, SSD-based storage is desirable. To our eyes, you should only opt for an SSD boot drive at this point in time. The difference in performance “feel” between a hard drive and an SSD boot drive is too big to ignore.

What Screen Size Is Best For A Gaming Laptop

This will arguably have the most immediate impact on your choice of the build. Picking the size of your screen basically dictates the size of your laptop. A 13-inch machine will be a thin-and-light ultrabook, while a 17-inch panel almost guarantees workstation stuff. At 15-inches, you’re looking at the most common size of the gaming laptop screen.

Razer Cortex: Game Booster

Another really clever little piece of free software is the Razer Cortex: Game Booster, which enables you to optimise your new gaming laptop for the better.

Despite being made by peripheral manufacturer Razer, the app can be used with any gaming PC or laptop and will automatically scan your machine and adjust your GPU, CPU and memory settings in order to configure for stronger performance.

Its really easy to use, and while there are the occasional adverts for Razers own products and premium services, you can easily ignore them and make the most of this little gem of a tool.

How To Choose The Best Gaming Laptop For You

Choosing the best gaming laptop is easy when youve got deep pockets or have a couple of thousand dollars to spare. Its when your budget is more limited that getting a great gaming laptop becomes trickier.

Lucky for us, were getting plenty of more affordably-priced CPUs and GPUs that dont compromise on power. The latest internals like the Intel Comet Lake, AMD Big Navi and the Nvidia RTX 3000 series are more capable yet also cheaper than ever. That means that gaming notebooks under $1000 can be just as capable as any gaming PC while keeping things portable and space-saving like the best Ultrabooks.

Still, some components are more powerful or cheaper than others. While its no longer a hard and fast rule, AMDs offerings are generally more affordable, which means that AMD Ryzen-powered laptops tend to be slightly cheaper.

In terms of graphics cards, Nvidia is still king when it comes to performance, although which RTX card you should go for depends on the type of gaming experience you want. The RTX 3060, for example, is a terrific mid-range contender with lots of power for 1080p gaming. However, if you want that 4K goodness, an RTX 3070 or higher is the way to go.

Consider the RAM as well. There are many gaming laptops that start you off with an 8GB DDR4 memory, which is the minimum these days. However, if you play a lot of demanding AAA titles, at least 16GB is recommended for the smoothest experience.

Don’t Forget The Keyboard: Lighting And Layouts

One of the typical features that sets apart a gaming laptop is a colorful, backlit keyboard. These vary quite a bit from model to model, with more elaborate backlighting going hand-in-hand with higher prices and a higher general level of other components.

Almost all budget gaming laptops will employ single-color backlighting to keep costs down. The next step up is lighting programmable by zone, with three or four blocks of the keyboard independently customizable in different colors, but this is not common in budget machines. Keyboards with per-key, individually programmable lighting are the province of high-end machines only.

Also look at the key layout. Models with an isolated cluster of arrow keys or well-defined WASD keys get bonus points, in our book. Also, because most budget gaming laptops are 15.6-inch models, check for a dedicated number pad to the right of the main key area, if you prefer to have oneâor not, for that matter. Some machines of this screen size will have one, some won’t.

Nifty Tricks To Make Sure Your Notebook Gaming Experience Is A Good One

Gaming on a laptop is never going to be perfect at least not when compared to playing your favorite shooter on a desktop PC. But those compromises dont mean that gaming on a notebook isnt a worthwhile pursuit. Far from it after all, its the only way you can enjoy a blast of PC gaming while youre out and about, maybe on a long and deadly dull train journey. And there are definitely ways of making your laptop gaming experience a better one, which is exactly what were going to look at in these tips.

Ces 2022 Was A Great Example Of The Changes Coming To Pc Gaming

Analysis: laptops are the future as gaming PCs become more niche

CES 2022 is on the way out, and it was another odd year for the show as we all covered it from the comfort of our chairs, rather than endlessly running between different hotels in Las Vegas. However, what felt exceptionally strange is how much of the PC gaming presence at the show revolved around the best gaming laptops.

While the gaming PC isnt going anywhere we got our fair share of exciting components like the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 and some juicy gaming monitors like the Alienware AW3423DW when you turn to the three giant PC hardware companies, AMDs, Intels and Nvidias presentations revolved mostly around laptops, even if there were bits of desktop news laced in there.

Its entirely possible that this is because CES is a show for the tech world at large, and laptops in general are more mainstream-friendly than a hulking gaming PC. But it goes further than that.

In the face of a global silicon shortage thats been going on for two years now, gaming laptops are starting to become one of the easiest ways to get into PC gaming, where traditionally its always been the other way around.

How Portable Do You Need It

When it comes to gaming systems, there are different levels of portability, ranging from “lift with your knees” to “regular laptop.” Generally, the more powerful the laptop, the less portable it is.

  • Minimal Portability : If you plan to keep your laptop in your home and leave it on your desk or just move it between rooms, a system with a 17 or 18-inch display like the Alienware 17 should be fine. Laptops in this size range are usually the most powerful, because they have plenty of room for heat-generating components. However, they’re heavy to carry, a tough fit for most bags and too power-hungry to use unplugged for very long.
  • Medium Portability : If you want to use the gaming notebook on your lap and carry it around more often, consider a 15-inch notebook, such as the OriginPC Eon15-S.These systems weigh between 4.6 and 7.2 pounds while lasting an average of 5 hours and 50 minutes on a charge.
  • Best Portability : If you’re constantly on the move, you’ll want to consider 13 or 14-inch laptops like the Razer Blade. Notebooks in this size range typically weigh under 5 pounds and tend to have longer battery lives with an average endurance of 7 hours and 38 minutes. However, 13 and 14-inch gaming laptops usually don’t come with the most powerful CPU or GPU, because they just don’t have enough space to dissipate all that heat.

Display Details Part One: Size And Resolution

You should keep four specs in mind when looking at a given gaming laptop’s display panel: the screen size, the native resolution, the refresh rate, and the panel type.

As we noted earlier, 15.6 inches is the general screen-size rule for most under-$1,000 gaming laptops. This size is a good compromise in ways that extend beyond cost. Sometimes, gaming on the biggest laptop screen possibleâand with a few exotic exceptions, that’s the 17-inch classâis the way to go. But if you’ve ever tried carrying one of these machines, or shopped for a laptop bag that can fit both it and its gigantic power adapter, you may have second thoughts. Many of these notebooks weigh six pounds or more, and the lightest ones tend to be far from the cheapest.

A 15-inch gamer still won’t be an ideal daily traveler, but most are a lot more manageable than their larger kin. Also, today’s 15-inch gaming rigs are better suited for use in true mobile fashionâthat is, off an AC power plugâthan those of past years. We’ve seen a few hit six or more hours of battery life, albeit in everyday productivity use or playing back video gaming will trim that number considerably.

How To Get A Gaming PC For Free! Actually Works! 2020

For the best possible gaming experience, top-end gaming laptops are usually equipped with a high-spec Intel Core CPU, like the ASUS ROG Zephyrus or the Razer Blade 15. A Little Light Gaming

I also ran the Asus machine through benchmark trials at its native 1080p resolution in the popular games Far Cry 5 and Rise of the Tomb Raider .

The machine hit 48 frames per second and 41fps in Far Cry 5, and 56fps and 43fps in Rise of the Tomb Raider. Since both of these games are locked at 30fps on consoles, you can expect in-game visual fluidity from the TUF Gaming FX504G that falls somewhere between the PS4/Xbox One and a more expensive gaming rig featuring a GTX 1060 or 1070 that can handle triple-A games at a consistent 60fps.

The Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti that the TUF Gaming wields is a just-good-enough graphics chip for gaming at medium to high settings at 30 to 40 frames per second , depending on the game. You’ll want at least a GeForce GTX 1060 for smooth gaming on top settings or for powering virtual reality. Unfortunately, the graphics options are the Asus TUF Gaming FX504G family’s biggest limitation. You can opt for a Dell Inspiron 15 7000 with a more powerful GTX 1060, if you so desire. The same goes for the Lenovo Legion Y520, which you can get with a 3GB GTX 1060 for a little over a grand. Asus offers only two GPUs in the TUF Gaming FX504G, however: the GTX 1050 Ti, like in the model I reviewed here, and the GeForce GTX 1050 in the $699 unit that features the lesser TN display. Even the $1,299 model of the TUF is a GTX 1050 Ti.
