Which Apple Laptop Should I Buy

If You’re A Media Pro

How To Know Which MacBook You Should Buy

In particular, media professionals will need to grapple with the Universal apps issue the most, and are the users most affected by the performance differences in the first place. This is potentially an issue, but it’s still pretty seamlessly handled by macOS. The majority of users can get by on emulated software, will be thankful for the M1’s base improvements, and not have to think about this much further.

Content creators are another matter. Those currently using a MacBook Pro or Mac mini for work, where margins of speed and wait times make a big difference, are the main beneficiaries of what the M1 could offer. If youre a media pro, you will be thankful for the decreased video encode and Photoshop edit times.

To get a sense of the performance jump in both emulated and Universal apps, check out the following benchmark results:

The Handbrake 1.4 Beta and Cinebench R23 results are those running natively, and you can see how much of a difference this makes. Eventually, all major applications will be converted to Universal apps, but there will be a waiting period. Its worth noting that even through emulation, though, the M1-based systems outpaced the Intel models in some cases. The apps that run natively beat them by a much bigger margin, showing whats possible on the M1 chip.;

What Are The Best Apple Laptops

There are many factors to consider when choosing the best Apple laptops; below are the most important ones, which we considered while we were researching this list.

Webcam: Every MacBook has a 720P webcam built into the lid. Youll get better video quality from a standalone webcam, but its nice to use in a pinch.

Operating System: All MacBooks run MacOS, a desktop operating system designed by Apple. MacOS is updated throughout the year, with the biggest release coming in Autumn. Apple generally supports its laptops with software updates for around seven years.

Screen Size: Apples laptops have one of two screen sizes: 13.3 inches and 16 inches. The larger display is better if you prefer to have a lot of apps on screen at once, and dont mind carrying a heavier computer around.

Screen Resolution:;Each laptop Apple makes has a high resolution retina display, which makes text, images, and videos look incredibly clear. If youve gotten used to a clear screen on your smartphone, youll appreciate this immensely.

Processor: A MacBook runs either a high-end processor from Intel, or one of Apples new M-series chips. Apple is beginning to transition all of its computers to its own processors, which are more powerful and energy efficient. Some apps may only run on Intel processors, though.

Battery Life:;The laptops below all get between 10 and 20 hours of battery life on a single charge, which is more than enough to get you through a standard day of use.

Best Macbook Pro To Choose

The MacBook Pro range starts with a decent-spec laptop that will suit most users, moving up to a power-packed head turner for those with a seriously generous budget. Realistically, you don’t need to plump for the top-end model unless you’re really looking to do some serious graphics work.

The Touch Bar is a feature on all 13-inch and 16-inch Pros. It’s essentially a slim touchscreen that is context sensitive, and can be used for scrolling through photos or scrubbing through a video. Is it essential? No. Is it cool? Yeah, it is.

All models also enable Touch ID as a way to log into sites or pay for items. Again, its a nicety, not a necessity.

Most users will get away with the entry-level 13-inch MacBook Pro, especially now it’s been granted that M1 Chip upgrade. It may not have the processing power of the pricier models, but they won’t miss that if they’re simply surfing, streaming, and working.

Opt for a 16-inch model, and you’ll get a beautiful 3072 x 1920 Retina screen. Both are perfect for designers, but with storage purely solid state drive based, you might want to look into a decent external hard drive for all those large image files.

Verdict: There’s no bad’ MacBook Pro to choose, but only opt for the 16-inch models if the kind of work you do means you can really justify the expense. Otherwise, it’s power you may not need.

Research And Buying Tips

Whats the best laptop brand?

Picking just one laptop brand as the best is a bit of a challenge lately. There are so many great laptops available today, and they come from several manufacturers. Hold our feet to the fire, though, and well have to pick Dell as the overall best. Dell seems invested in applying the latest materials to improve the performance of its laptops, and its constantly coming up with new innovative designs.

HP is no slouch either. It, too, utilizes some unique materials;and makes some customer-friendly design decisions, such as resisting the thin-and-light trend to pack in more battery capacity.

In terms of customer service and reliability, Apple carries the torch for its convenience. Its issues with its recent keyboards have been fixed, making MacBooks highly durable. Its customer service is top-notch. Though if youre looking for 5G laptops specifically, only a few models already exist.

Whats a 2-in-1 laptop?

A 2-in-1 laptop is one that isnt limited to the traditional clamshell configuration. Instead, a 2-in-1 can convert from a clamshell into some form of tablet PC that allows for natural inking and media consumption.

Today, you can pick from among a variety of different kinds of 2-in-1s. The most popular types are the tablet with a detachable keyboard, epitomized by the Microsoft Surface Pro 7, and the 360-degree convertible where the display flips around to turn into a slate.

Apple Macbook Air : What Else Do I Need To Know

Which Apple Laptop should I buy?

Theres a new MacBook Air in development, but we dont expect to see it until at least the end of 2021 ;possibly later. Its expected to come in as a more powerful and more expensive option with a new design, with the existing MacBook Air remaining as the entry-level option. That should reassure you that the current MacBook Air is a smart buy.

Overall, then, we think that most people looking to upgrade should buy the Apple MacBook Air M1 2020, as it is a fantastic laptop that is future-proofed in terms of technology and comes with the traditional quality Apple build quality. It’s a great, portable system that will be ideal for many Mac users.

Yes, a new 2021 MacBook Air M1, if it does indeed come out this year, will be faster and may have a tweaked design, but right now we think only the most well-heeled shoppers should consider waiting, as when introduced it will be the more expensive system.

Goodbye Intel: Testing The Apple M1

Once all of this transitional dust settles, M1 Macs are going to be significantly faster across the board compared with the Intel Macs that preceded them. To demonstrate, we ran a handful of tests on our recommended M1 MacBook Air and Pro configurations, the Intel Core i5 MacBook Air configuration that we recommended earlier in 2020, and a fully loaded Intel Core i9 iMac from 2020.4 Heres what we ran:

  • The Geekbench 5 benchmark, which is good at showing how processors do when performing for short periods of time. This includes both a single-core test, which measures the processors speed when just one of its cores is active, and a multi-core test that uses all available processor cores.
  • Maxon Cinebench R23, which can be used to demonstrate how processors perform over longer periods of time. It also has both single- and multi-core tests, and we ran the 30-minute version of the test.
  • Transcoding an 87-minute movie using HandBrakes 1080p30 Fast preset, to test how quickly each Mac can encode a video.5
  • Running devMEremenkos Xcode Benchmark in using Apples Xcode development environment. This tests how long it takes a Mac to compile code, as youd do before you uploaded an app to one of Apples App Stores.

We chose all of these tests because theyve already been optimized for Apple silicon, and because they represent a mix of basic benchmarks plus activities that actual people do with their Macs.

Applecare Availability And Pricing

Apple offers AppleCare plans on a range of devices, and the cost of the plan varies depending on which device it covers. Generally, the more expensive the device, the more AppleCare costs.

In addition to the standard one-time purchase option, Apple also offers AppleCare+ via a monthly recurring payment plan for iPhones, iPads, and Apple Watches in certain countries. Pricing varies depending on the cost of AppleCare+ for your device, but a $199 plan will equate to $9.99 per month, and a $299 plan will equate to $14.99 per month. AppleCare+ is therefore more expensive when paid monthly, but it does offer flexibility to cancel it early or extend it beyond the standard coverage term.

If You Have A Recent Mac

From here, the answer to “M1 or not M1?” starts to get less clear-cut. If you bought a MacBook Air or MacBook Pro, or a Mac mini, in recent years and its working fine, its pretty difficult to direct you in good conscience to run out and buy a new one.

At the same time, budget aside for a moment, the M1 machines are definitely faster. Particularly if youre on a MacBook Air, even the early-2020 Intel-based model, you might feel your work straining against its performance. The M1-based model excels at media tasks like the past versions could never hope to do.

The boost in battery life is also appealing. But again, Id be hard pressed to tell anyone with a functioning 2020 MacBook Air to spend $1,000 on a new one so soon. Perhaps you can sell your older laptop to help justify the purchase, or hand it off to a family member in need.

MacBook Air owners stand to gain the most, but for owners of a recent MacBook Pro, it’s harder to justify. The M1 is superior to the Intel models, no doubt, but even the modest performance gap is not enough that I’ll tell you to ditch a perfectly good 2019 or 2020 MacBook. Most users don’t have workloads that would make this a very smart use of your money, as tempting as the added speed may be.

The Best Laptop In 2021 For Big

Which Apple Laptop should I buy?

Even if youve used a light laptop before, its difficult to explain how light the LG Gram 17 is. It has a massive 17-inch display, but its somehow only three pounds. Picking it up messes with your mind; you feel like youre not holding anything.

But the Gram 17s weight isnt the only standout feature. It also has some of the best battery life you can get, lasting over 12 hours in our testing. Add a great keyboard, a solid port selection, quiet fans, and a fast processor, and theres very little not to like about this device.

Not everyone needs a 17-inch display, and many folks who do are looking for a heavier-duty workstation that probably doesnt get moved very often. But if youd just really like a large screen for your daily office work and Netflixing, youre the target demographic for this machine. Its a niche, but truly impressive device without much real competition in todays market.

Flaws But Not Dealbreakers

Apple continues to include a basic 720p webcam in all of its MacBooks. This is OK for casual video chatting where all the person on the other end of the call needs to do is see your face, and the M1s image processing does help with exposure and white balance. But the webcam in the $1,000 MacBook Air is still noticeably inferior to the front-facing camera Apple includes with the $400 iPhone SE, or any of our less-than-$100 standalone webcam picks.

Current MacBook models use Thunderbolt 3 for all connectivity, including power. This means that if you own any hard drives, scanners, printers, thumb drives, or card readers that use USB Type-A ports, you need a hub or adapter; similarly, if you want to use an external display or projector, you need the right video adapter.

The M1 MacBook Air is missing one thing that older Intel models had: the ability to connect to more than one external display. That external screen can have a resolution as high as 6K, which covers Apples astronomically expensive Pro Display XDR, but even if you just want to connect a basic 1080p budget monitor to your MacBook, the laptop can only handle one of them.1 That said, the M1 MacBook Air feels faster and its animations look more fluid in day-to-day use than the previous Intel MacBook Air when connected to an external 4K display, and its also quieter since theres no fan to kick on.

The Biggest Macbook: Macbook Pro

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is much more computer than you need to browse the internet, edit documents, or do casual photo and video editing. But if you want a bigger screen for editing large spreadsheets and databases on the go, or if you want more Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, the Pro might be worth the extra money. And although it still uses Intel processors rather than newer Apple chips, it still offers all the performance necessary for editing photos and videos professionally, running 3D drafting programs, or compiling app code for Apples app stores. Its also the best MacBook if you want to use more than one external displayit supports as many as four, where both the M1 Macs we recommend can use only one. Its speakers are also surprisingly good for a laptop. But it costs more than twice as much as the MacBook Air, its 1.6 pounds heavier, its battery life is relatively mediocre, and it runs a little hotthough that last part has been true of most 15-inch MacBook Pros in years past.
