Is Apple Laptop Worth Buying For A Programmer
If you didn’t know already, a lot of programmers at the world’s top brands, including Google, use Apple laptops. While you can code just as efficiently on Linux and Windows powered laptops, it all comes down to your preferences and habits. Apple’s macOS has all the IDEs and development tools. The company’s recent laptops have sub-par keyboards, though, and they are pretty expensive.

The Biggest Macbook: Macbook Pro
The 16-inch MacBook Pro is much more computer than you need to browse the internet, edit documents, or do casual photo and video editing. But if you want a bigger screen for editing large spreadsheets and databases on the go, or if you want more Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, the Pro might be worth the extra money. And although it still uses Intel processors rather than newer Apple chips, it still offers all the performance necessary for editing photos and videos professionally, running 3D drafting programs, or compiling app code for Apples app stores. Its also the best MacBook if you want to use more than one external displayit supports as many as four, where both the M1 Macs we recommend can use only one. Its speakers are also surprisingly good for a laptop. But it costs more than twice as much as the MacBook Air, its 1.6 pounds heavier, its battery life is relatively mediocre, and it runs a little hotthough that last part has been true of most 15-inch MacBook Pros in years past.
The Best Macbook Air Deals
The MacBook Air is Apples entry-level laptop. Its best suited for typical productivity work, with a comfortable keyboard, excellent trackpad, and all-day battery life. The most recent model includes the Apple-designed M1 processor and lacks a fan for quiet, efficient performance. It ticks all right boxes when it comes to performance and price, which is why its our number one pick for the best laptop of 2021.
The base MacBook Air with the M1 chip has 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. It typically sells for $999, however, its currently available at for $850 once you add it to your cart, where additional savings will automatically apply. This matches the all-time low for this popular entry-level laptop. The 512GB configuration is also on sale at in all three colorways for $1,100, a discount of $150 that automatically applies at checkout.
Although retailers like Best Buy and B& H Photo are selling the base 256GB MacBook Air and upgraded, 512GB model at regular price, we have seen them drop the pricing in the past to match Amazons discounts. These deals can come and go quickly, though, we expect more to come as the holiday shopping season draws near.

Which Macbook Should I Buy And Should I Pick The M1 Processor
It may not be as attention grabbing as a brushed aluminium case or a stunning screen, but a laptops processor plays a vital role in how fast and efficient it is.
The best load webpages in a flash and power through demanding tasks, such as video editing, whereas a cheap processor could make anything more taxing than online shopping slow your laptop to a crawl.
Apples new SoC M1 processor concentrates everything onto a single chip, unlike the Intel Core i5 and i7 processors in older Macs, which use multiple chips to manage different tasks. SoCs are common in smartphones and tablets, but less so in laptops.
On paper, the M1 is slower than the Core i5 and i7, which both have higher maximum clock speeds. Despite this, Apple makes some bold speed claims for example, that the new MacBook Air should be three times faster when exporting videos from iMovie.
Does it live up to these claims? Below you can see our summary of the specs and promises of these top-tier laptops, or if you join Which? youll be able to access the full reviews to see how they fared.

M1 MacBook Air :
If you’re after a performance boost, but still need that lightweight form factor, the new MacBook Air M1 might be your best bet. Don’t worry though, there’s a serious performance boost in this model but you’re not paying as much for it as you may think. In fact, we even saw some early discounts over Black Friday 2020, so Apple certainly isn’t afraid to introduce MacBook deals on this model every now and then.
The new M1 chip gives Intel a serious run for its money, and battery life doesn’t even suffer for it. Plus, you’re getting it all for the same price as the previous model which makes this the go-to for a 2020 release right now.
The original 2020 MacBook Air doesn’t look quite so good now that the M1 version is out in the wild. However, as prices start to fall on the early-2020 model, you may well find some significant MacBook deals up for grabs here.
You’ll find Intel 10th generation processors with up to quad-core CPUs available here. Plus, this model was the first to offer 256GB of storage space at entry level, with up to 16GB RAM on offer as well. Like the M1 model, the entry level 2020 MacBook Air also starts at a lower sub-$1,000 / £1,000 price.

Better For Video And Coding: 13
The M1 version of Apples 13-inch MacBook Pro is better than the MacBook Air for specific kinds of work that benefit from additional processor speed, and it has a larger battery that lasts for a few extra hours. Otherwise, the Pro has most of the same, well, pros and cons as the Air, including its good keyboard and trackpad, great screen, limited port selection, and mediocre webcam.
Most common tasksopening apps and browser windows, playing videos, making a few photo editsneed peak processor performance for only a few seconds at a time, so you wont notice a difference between the Air and the Pro for those things. But the Pro has a fan inside to help it dissipate heat, which means the M1 processor can run at its peak speed pretty much indefinitely, where the Air eventually has to slow down to prevent overheating. In our tests, this made the Pro between 10% and 20% faster at time- and processor-intensive tasks like encoding video, compressing files, and compiling apps for distribution via any of Apples various app stores.
The Pro we recommend comes with 16 GB of memory and 256 GB of storagethe extra memory will help if you open dozens of browser tabs at once, or edit large high-resolution images and videos. If you dont need that extra memory because you dont do that kind of work with your computer, get the Air instead. You can add a larger SSD if you want, but you should still consider external storage before you pay Apples sky-high SSD prices.
The Best Macbook Pro Deals
The touch bar-equipped MacBook Pro comes in more sizes and options than the Air, and its geared more toward demanding use cases. The base model is the 13-inch, M1-powered variant, which includes a brighter screen, longer battery life, and an internal fan designed to maintain performance under increased workloads. The M1 MacBook Pro 13 normally starts at $1,299, but the base model with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage is on sale for $150 off at and Best Buy bringing it down to $1,150.
The upgraded version of the 13-inch M1 MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD is also $150 off at and Best Buy for a final sale price of $1,350.
- 12% off
The MacBook Pro 13 has the same M1 processor as the Air but includes a brighter screen, longer battery life, and a fan for better sustained performance.
Of course, you can also buy some older MacBook Pro models, including the 13-inch, mid-2020 model. The older device features four Thunderbolt ports, Windows bootcamp-ready Ice Lake processors, the current scissor-switch keyboard, increased RAM, and various storage configurations. Right now, the 13-inch model is available in two configurations at Amazon: one with a 10th Gen i7 Intel processor and 512GB of storage for $1,999, and one with 1TB of storage and a 2.0GHz 10th Gen Intel Core i5 processor for $1,600.

How To Choose The Best Macbooks For You
We have a separate guide on how to decide which MacBook is right for you. The TL DR version is to consider how much power you need and what you are willing to spend.
For us, the MacBook Air is an easy choice. It comes in at $999 yet sports similar performance and endurance to the MacBook Pro thanks to its M1 processor. It’s also the most portable of the bunch, and the improved 13.3-inch display is great for watching TV shows or movies.
If you want a bit more endurance and better performance over longer periods, get the 13-inch MacBook Pro with M1. It lasts for a remarkable 16 hours and 32 minutes on a charge and scored benchmark numbers that blow away the competition.
It’s not so easy for us to recommend Apple’s other options. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with four Thunderbolt 3 ports and the 16-inch MacBook Pro are stuck with Intel chips that are less powerful than M1 and don’t support iOS and iPadOS apps. Apple is expected to release new versions with Apple Silicon in the coming weeks, so we suggest you try holding out until then.

Touch Bar But No Touching
There’s a unique aspect to the MacBook Pro models that you must consider if the “Pro” part of the name applies to you: the Touch Bar. This is a long, thin, touch-enabled OLED screen that comes mounted forward of the MacBook Pro’s keyboard. The Touch Bar is unique to Apple and highly specialized. It’s Apple’s answer to touch gestures in Windows 10, and it’s most useful in professional apps like the Adobe Creative Suite and Apple’s Final Cut Pro X, which let you use the Touch Bar to scrub through a video timeline, switch tool selections, and much more. This feature is not available on the MacBook Air.
The Touch Bar is not a substitute for the touch screens that you’ll find on many Windows ultraportables, however. You cannot use it to interact with basic screen elements like the menu buttons on websites, nor can you use it to draw on the screen. An Apple iPad or a Windows laptop is your best alternative for these tasks. Fortunately, the trackpads on all Apple laptops are excellent, with oversize glass surfaces and virtual “haptic” feedback instead of a physical click mechanism.
If you’re a video or photo editor, you’ll want to strongly consider the 16-inch model with an AMD Radeon Pro graphics card, which can speed up editing tasks. The 13-inch MacBook Pro model comes with either Intel integrated graphics or M1 graphics, but does not offer the choice for a discrete GPU.

The Best Mac Mini Deals

Like the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro 13, the Mini features Apples new M1 processor. It starts at $699, with the price varying based on your RAM and storage configurations. The outright best deal on the base Mac Mini is at , where you can pick up the 256GB model for a historical low of $600 .
As for the 512GB model, we have seen retailers such as and B& H Photo offer it for $100 off its usual $899 price point, but there are currently no sizable discounts to be found.
What You Need To Know
The very first thing you need to be aware of is that Apple updated the 13in MacBook Pro twice in 2020. There are four 13in MacBook Pro models: two were updated in May 2020, and the other two in November 2020.
The other thing you need to know is that the MacBook Pro models that were updated in November now feature Apple’s very own processors, known as the M1 chips. Read about Apple’s M1 MacBook Pro. Plus our review is here: 13in M1 MacBook Pro review.
When they arrived earlier in 2020 the 2.0GHz Intel-powered 13in MacBook Pro models looked like a good buy – but following the arrival of the M1 models they have lost some of their shine. The new entry-level MacBook Pro are now more powerful and more Pro than ever, but the Intel models do offer more RAM and some other benefits. Read our comparison of the 13in MacBook Pro M1 vs Intel to find out how the models compare.
But now as we near the autumn of 2021 it is looking more and more likely that a replacement for the 2.0GHz MacBook Pro model will launch soon. This new model could be a new mid-range MacBook Pro with a new M1X chip from Apple. It may even gain a redesign and a larger 14in display. Read more here: 14in MacBook Pro rumours.
We also think Apple will also release the successor to the 16in MacBook Pro at the same time as the 14in model. So expect a new 16in MacBook Pro this autumn – October is the most likely month. Wondering whether to buy a MacBook Pro now? Read: 16in MacBook Pro: buy now or wait for the new model?

Who This Is For And When To Buy
The best reason to buy a MacBook is that you need or prefer macOS to Windows. The operating system is stable and easy to use, but more important, it integrates well with iPhones and iPadsfor example, iMessages and SMS messages sent from your Mac also appear on your iPhone and vice versa, and features such as AirDrop and iCloud make it easy to share notes, pictures, videos, reminders, contacts, passwords, bookmarks, and other data between your devices.
Macs are also a good choice if you want great support. Apples tech support is routinely rated above that of most if not all other PC and phone makers, and Apple Stores and Apple authorized service providers offer accessible in-person tech support and repairs in many locations.
And MacBooks that use Apple processors instead of Intel processors are better than Intel MacBooks and most Windows laptops in some key ways. Apples processors have much better performance and faster graphics, and they get stellar battery life. Their batteries are also less prone to draining quickly when youre using an energy-hogging app like Zoom or Google Chrome.
