Connects To Two 4k Monitors At Once
Thunderbolt 3 can transmit video via the DisplayPort 1.2 standard, but one-ups DP by offering two connections in a single wire. While a single DP 1.2 cable can handle only one 4K monitor while running at 60Hz, a single Thunderbolt 3 connection can output to two 4K monitors at 60Hz, one 4K monitor at 120Hz, or one 5K monitor at 60Hz.
You can connect from a Thunderbolt 3 port directly to a single monitor, using a Thunderbolt-to-DisplayPort cable. However, if you want to use multiple monitors over a single cable, you’ll need a Thunderbolt dock like many of the best docking stations available right now.
Why Do People Buy Laptops
Before we dive into alternatives, let’s take a moment to understand why people buy laptops in the first place.
The biggest advantages they have over desktops are their weight, size, and portability. A typical modern laptop might weigh around five pounds it’s easy enough to throw in your bag and take with you wherever you go.
And what are people actually using their laptops for? The vast majority fall into one of a few broad categories: music production, video and film editing, word processing, gaming, passive entertainment, and so on.
However, laptops are not the best choice for any of these categories.
X The Speed Of The Fastest Usb Connection
Thunderbolt 3 is capable of transmitting at a rate of 40Gbps, which is a lot quicker than USB 3.1’s rate of 10Gbps or USB 3.0’s limit of 5Gbps. It’s also double the bandwidth of Thunderbolt 2 . With that kind of throughput, you can attach a graphics amplifier or eGPU like the Razer Core and turn your lightweight laptop into a bona-fide gaming rig. The system can contact the GPU at the same speed as if it were attached directly to the motherboard.
You can copy files to a speedy external SSD that’s faster than most internal drives. The same benefits apply when you’re recording directly from a professional-grade 4K video camera.

Desktops Whats The Appeal
These giants of the tech world seem to be much preferred by those who value performance over portability. Or maybe its just that theyd rather not pay for a laptops comparatively high price tag?
Powerful laptops offer the best of both worlds for those who need power and portability just link up a laptop to a monitor if you need a bigger screen and then youve got everything you need. When people mention powerful laptops, that usually means that they are relatively bulky and heavy. And even though they may actually be powerful, they are still not able to compete with what is considered a powerful desktop.
All the specialists will tell you that if a laptop and a desktop have similar specs, the desktop will be more effective. But why is that the case if the specs are similar?
The answer is because desktops usually come with full-size parts that are often more powerful than the similar counterparts designed for laptops. Its especially noticeable with processors and a computers overall speed. Yes, laptops may come with processors that have similar model numbers, but that doesnt mean that they will match the desktops performance. Thats just how it is. Lets give you an example of what we mean:
But what happens when laptops and desktops are evenly matched in performance? Is one more expensive than the other for basically giving you the same result?

Why Do You Need A Telephoto Lens At All
Before I get to the results of my testing, I want to briefly address how telephoto is useful in general. The industry has trended toward ultra-wide lenses being a greater priority the Pixel 5 is the best example of this with Google switching to a wide-angle and ultra-wide setup from the wide-angle and telephoto of the Pixel 4 XL. Googles justification for the change was exactly what I will be looking at in my testing: that you can do a digital zoom with the main camera to replace having a telephoto lens. Ultra-wide-angle lenses are incredibly useful as well, but it turns out telephoto also has its place.
Beyond the basic notion that having more options and flexibility is better in photography, there are quite a few specific use cases for a telephoto lens. Wildlife is perhaps the classic answer, getting shots of animals without disturbing them or putting yourself in danger with potentially aggressive animals. On a similar note is getting photos of your kids without interrupting their playing or drawing attention to the fact that you are taking their photo. Using a telephoto camera in these situations can yield some of the best candid shots.

Pick A Platform: Windows 10 Vs Mac Vs Chrome Os
This is not an easy question to answer, especially if you’re not familiar with both Macs and PCs. But this quick overview of each platforms strengths and weaknesses should help.
The most flexible operating system, Windows 10, runs on more laptop models than Chrome OS or MacOS. Windows notebooks range in price from under $150 to several thousand dollars and offer a wide array of features from touch screens to fingerprint readers to dual graphics chips. Windows 10, the latest version of Microsoft’s flagship operating system, provides a number of improvements over Windows 7 and 8, including the ability to switch between tablet and desktop modes, a revamped Start menu with Live Tiles and the Cortana digital assistant.
Since its launch in July 2015, Windows 10 has also added a host of improvements, including the ability to use follow-up questions with Cortana, search your email using natural language and use your stylus to scribble almost anywhere. Windows 10 laptops are great for students, researchers and business users, and they’re the only machines gamers should consider.

Do You Really Need A Laptop
We’ve only shown you a glimpse into how easy it is to replace your laptop with other devices and services. The truth is, Steve Jobs was probably right: we are moving into a post-PC age. For people who only check Facebook and watch YouTube, there are better options out there.
Even if you need more computing power than a simple tablet, a laptop probably isn’t your best choice—these days, the cost of buying both a desktop and a tablet is not much different from only buying a laptop.

What Resolution Do You Play At
1008p resolution: If youre rocking a 1080p display, you should be fine with Intels entry-level GTX 1050 or GTX 1060 graphic card models. They should give you decent frame rates at medium details levels. Activating all bells and whistles at Full HD requires a GeForce 1070.
1440p resolution: Moving up to 1440p, a very common and popular gaming resolution, you need that 1070 at the very least or a AMD RX 580 or Vega 56/64.
4K resolution: Moving on to 4K…well, get ready to dump some serious $$$ on graphics cards. The $800+ GeForce 1080 Ti is the bare minimum for 4K and even then youll have issues running 4K at High Details at a smooth 60fps. Thats why, as of mid 2018, you definitely need a SECOND 1080 Ti or even a Titan Xp to play at 4K.
See these two beasts? Thats whats required to run games at 4k 60fps with all detail levels enabled. We dont live in a land where 4K gaming is really financially feasible, yet.

Which laptop should I get?
With so many laptops to choose from, selecting the best one to fit your budget can be like navigating a minefield. Even making sense of the ever-changing list of product specifications is no easy feat. Laptops vary greatly by CPU speed, graphics capability, size, drive storage, and RAM, among other things. Whats more, your laptop needs may be completely different to someone elses, only adding to the confusion.
For some, a flashy 4K screen may be important. Others may want a high-performing CPU, like AMDs new Ryzen 5000 processors, to give them a competitive edge in games. Getting value for money can be tricky too, since newer technologies dont always mean better performance. For example, older-generation CPUs can sometimes outperform newer products in benchmark tests. For these reasons it pays to do your homework before you purchase a laptop.
To simplify the process for you weve put together a list of 12 criteria that you can use as a guide for what to look for. It may seem laborious delving into each category, but there are a lot of things to consider. At the end of the day, taking time to research your new device will mean you avoid making a costly mistake and get a laptop thats just right for you.
Frequently Asked Questions About Colleges That Offer Free Laptops
Many college classes include coursework that must be completed using software on a computer. Students may need Microsoft Office to write a paper or complete a PowerPoint presentation, for example. Even students in nontech programs may need to complete assignments on a computer. Although colleges typically give students access to computer labs, these may not always be convenient or accessible.
If you attend an online college that offers free laptops, you may qualify for a free laptop or tablet through your school. Other options to get a free laptop include contacting a nonprofit organization that gives refurbished laptops to students in need or asking around to see if anyone you know has a used laptop they don’t need anymore. Some people may be happy to help out a struggling student.
If you receive more FAFSA aid than you need to cover your tuition and fees, you may be able to use the rest to buy supplies, including a computer or tablet. Some schools issue a rebate check for the balance of the FAFSA funds once settling student accounts.
Many students use a Chromebook or other inexpensive laptop. However, some academic programs require an Apple computer, such as a MacBook Pro. Regardless of what everyone else uses, you should make sure your laptop meets the requirements for the program you’re enrolling in.

Key Features Are Missing
One reason why you should consider activating Windows 10 is its features. Windows 10 comes with several features, many of which are only available in the licensed version. Some of my favorites are systemwide dark mode, Windows Defender and Security, Focus Assist, and Windows Hello, among others.
You also cant install and use Microsoft Office in Windows 10 unless you activate it. If you manage to install the crack or trial version, you will be greeted with a constant pop-up reminding you to activate. Thats annoying and counter-productive.
What you do get is a watermark at the bottom right of the screen that reminds you that you are using the free version.
These are just some of the key features that you would be missing. And the Windows dev team is constantly working on new features that you will never receive because you cant download updates either.
So Who Does Need A Cooling Pad
All of this is not to say that nobody should ever buy a laptop cooler. There are circumstances where a cooling pad is just the thing you need, and in those instances they are an affordable solution to a few irritating problems.
If youre using an older laptop that is prone to overheating meaning it gets so hot that it shuts down or reboots, or is too hot to touch then a cooling pad may make enough of a difference to squeeze some more usability out of the machine. That said, its a short-term solution to a long-term problem. If your laptop runs so hot that you could make a grilled cheese sandwich on it, then your laptop is in need of either repair or cleaning, if not both. The likely culprit is dust, which can clog the fan vents and choke the internal cooling hardware. You may be able to clean it out with a can of compressed air, or you may need to open up the chassis to shoo out the dust bunnies.
You may also need a cooler when youve pushed an underpowered system to its limits. Just because your Pentium-powered laptop can run the latest version of the Sims doesnt mean its well-suited to it, and in those instances, you may find that a cooling pad helps keep the laptop from overheating. That said, our testing data makes it pretty clear that cooling is all it will do theres simply no way for an external fan blowing air to magically make your laptop render more frames, but it will keep things just a little cooler.

Why Is Phone So Slow
If your Android is running slow, chances are the issue can be quickly fixed by clearing out excess data stored in your phones cache and deleting any unused apps. A slow Android phone may require a system update to get it back up to speed, although older phones may not be able to run the latest software properly.
Used Storage Space Of Your Current Drive
Why this item is important? The reason is that you need space to transfer everything saved in your current drive to your new SSD without having to decide what you will keep or delete. For many computer users, an SSD with no less than 240GB can maintain their old files and hold some new ones.
To figure out the used storage space of your current drive,
- please follow the same process that you did for item 1.
- But this time you are required to see how much of your drives available storage space you have used to save data.
- Estimate your percentageby looking at the capacity bar that is displayed next to your drive or by comparing the about the GB you have used to the drives total capacity.

Bugs Fixes And Patches
If you thought Windows updates were just about pushing new features or updating old ones, you are wrong. Microsoft frequently pushes small updates that fix known bugs and errors. These bugs affect how you interact with Windows OS as well as Microsoft apps.
The Microsoft development team are not the only people who are looking for these bugs. Independent developers and enthusiasts are also working as freelancers via the Microsoft Bug Bounty Program. If you find a bug and report it to Microsoft, you will receive a reward for your effort. These rewards can be substantial, which is why some people have made it their profession and do this for a living too.
