How Do You Unfreeze A Dell Laptop
During normal operation, or when you open certain applications a Dell Laptop can freeze. To unfreeze it there are a few solutions. Heres what they are:
Attempt to press the Ctrl, Alt, and delete buttons all at the same time. If this works it will bring up a list of options. The last option is Task Manager and close any programs that arent responding. If pressing these three buttons simultaneously doesnt work, restart your laptop.
Programs that have frozen in the Task Manager list will say Not Responding. You can right click on it and select End Task. Its common that only one program will freeze, which freezes the screen on your laptop. When you force close it, your laptop will be usable again.
Holding down the power button for more than about 5 seconds will restart it. But if this doesnt work, then unplug the battery on your laptop, wait for 5 to 10 seconds, and then plug it back in.
If youre not using a battery, unplug the power cord for your laptop. Then plug it back in and turn your laptop again.
In general, run Diagnostics by entering the BIOS after restarting your Dell Laptop. To do that press F12 repeatedly when the Dell Logo appears. One of the options is Diagnostics , select that by using the up and down arrows on the keyboard and pressing the enter key.

Why Does Your Asus Laptop Freeze After Logging Into Windows 10
Your Asus laptop might be freezing because of Malware or outdated or incompatible drivers. Perform a full antivirus scan on your laptop to check if its a Malware problem. Then download all the latest device drivers to ensure that your device drivers arent the problem.
If your drivers are all updated to the latest versions, try downgrading the drivers to earlier versions and see if that fixes the problem.
If doing the above doesnt work, you can try backing up all your data and then reinstalling your Windows OS. Try clean booting Windows 10 and if that doesnt work try downgrading to either Windows 8 or Windows 7.
If doing that also doesnt work, you can try running a netshwinsock reset command. To do this:
- Select Command Prompt from the menu.
- Type in netshwinsock reset and press Enter.
- Close the Command Prompt then restart your laptop.

Other Methods To Collect Data
Use memory dump to collect data for the physical computer that’s running in a frozen state
Follow the steps in this section carefully. Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.
If the physical computer is still running in a frozen state, follow these steps to enable and collect memory dump:
Make sure that the computer is set up to get a complete memory dump file and that you can access it through the network.
If it isn’t possible to access the affected computer through the network, try to generate a memory dump file through NMI. The result of the action may not collect a memory dump file if some of the following settings aren’t qualified.
Try to access the desktop of the computer by any means.
In case accessing the OS isn’t possible, try to remotely access Registry Editor on the computer. You can then check the type of memory dump file and page file with which the computer is currently configured.
From a remote computer that’s preferably in the same network and subnet, go to Registry Editor> Connect Network Registry. Then, connect to the affected computer, and verify the following settings:
Make sure that the CrashDumpEnabled registry entry is 1.
Make sure that there’s a paging file on the system drive of the computer, and it’s at least 100 MB over the installed RAM.
Virus Or Malware Attack
When you install any third-party application on your computer, it gets more prone to malware attacks. Therefore, it is best to use reliable antivirus software to keep your system safe from such attacks.
These malware attacks are also one main reason why your computer keeps on freezing. So, scan your PC for any viruses using any antivirus software. It will automatically detect and remove viruses from your computer.

Computer Is Overheating Because The Extruder Fan Is Dusty
When a computer which also includes Dell laptops overheats there is a fail safe built in that can freeze your computer to stop it from damaging the external components on your computer. Over time there can be a build up of dust on the extruder fan that blows air from inside the laptop to the outside air. And keeps the internal components from overheating.
This build up of dust means less air will be blown out of a laptop and can cause the internal components to overheat more regularly. Or, quite often. Causing a laptop to freeze. There are specially designed one-use compressed air canisters that can be used to blow out the fan. These are specifically designed for use on electronics.
A conventional air compressor used by mechanics that you may have in your home is generally too powerful to be used on the electric components of a laptop. So, its best not to use one of these. Simply blowing it with a bit of force like you would blow out a candle can also remove any dust.
Windows 10 doesnt have any way to check the temperature of your computer built in. But, there are various free software that you can use to see what the temperature is. Doing that can give you a good gauge as to whether your computer is running too hot.

Turn Off Fast Startup
Fast Startup is a handy feature that keeps your OS in hibernation mode rather than having to restart it entirely after a shutdown so that it reboots faster. Although it’s helpful in most cases, it can also freeze your Windows. The easiest way to avoid this would be to turn it off.
To turn off Fast Startup, follow these steps:
If turning off Fast Startup doesn’t solve the problem, turn it back on since it aids in fast reboots most of the time.
Turn Off Link State Power Management
Link State Power Management is a power saving mechanism. It has two options, the first one which is Moderate Power Savings, saves less power but recovers quickly from the sleep state. The second one, Maximum Power Savings, saves more power and the time to recover from the sleep state is increased. If you turn it off, the LSPM wont come into play. Users reported that turning this feature off helped with blank screens and freezing issues especially where NVIDIA/AMD Graphic Cards were being used.
Hold the Windows Key and Press R. Type powercfg.cpl and Click OK. Click Change Plan Settings for your Active Plan. Then choose Change Advanced Power Settings, scroll down until you see PCI Express -> Link State Power Management -> Click whatever the option is next to Settings, and set it to Off. Then test.

Free Memory Space On The C Drive
It is very pertinent to free up some space in the C drive of your computer. If your computer has low memory in the C drive, then your computer is likely to freeze intermittently.
Simply free up some space by deleting large files or some software that are no more useful. Alternatively, you can achieve this by using a wizard tool.
Stop Your Computer From Freezing
We should first check the Windows Event Viewer to see if there are system errors that could be causing the stuttering. This could tell us right away whats causing your problems.
Yellow warnings are not usually errors that cause stuttering but if you dont have any reds, try addressing some of those. It is impossible to list all the possible errors here, but read the error description in the lower pane, Google the error code or description and go from there.

Your Computer Could Have A Virus
Viruses can cause a lot of trouble to your computer. In fact, its not that uncommon for a virus to cause your PC to keep freezing.
If you dont have an antivirus installed, you really should. I personally use Avirafree version and run occasional scans with MalwareBytesfree version. For other options, check out our post on the best free Windows antivirus.
To see if viruses could be causing your computer to randomly freeze, try running a scan with the antivirus software you have installed. Heres an example for Avira:
Also for good measure I would run a scan with Malwarebytes after.
If your scans turned up clean, keep reading on to Step 7. Otherwise, get rid of those viruses!

Collect Data For The Freeze Issues
To collect data for a server freeze, check the following table, and use one or more of the suggested methods.
|Computer type and state|
|XenServer: Use method 1, 2, 3, or 4. These methods are listed later in this section.|
|A virtual machine that is no longer frozen||Use method 1, 2, 3, or 4. These methods are listed later in this section.|
A Large Number Of Programs Are Running
This is a very important issue to look out for. So many computer users are fond of opening many computer programs and software at the same time.
The negative effects of this are quite devastating. These programs are designed to take up a certain amount of space in the memory of the computer hence opening more programs implies consuming more space in the computer.
With this, your computer will be freezing intermittently. This underlines why you should only open programs that you need at that time.
This problem can be solved by locating the frozen program.
Simply check for task manager, select task manager. Scroll and click processes. Go through the list of programs, you will see the one that is frozen. Click it and select end task to close the program.

Why Your Computer Keeps Freezing And How To Fix It
Are you tired of shouting Why does my computer keep freezing?! into the void? Ive been through this myself several times, and have discovered many reasons why your computer keeps freezing.
More importantly, Im going to show you how to fix this problem step by step. Ive demonstrated the steps using Windows 10 but they should all work for Windows 7/8 as well.
Diagnose Possible Hardware Issues
A faulty hard drive, overloaded RAM, or a malfunctioning video card can be the reason that your laptop is freezing up. So you might want to run some tests to see whether its malfunctioning. Then you can solve the problem by replacing the faulty part.
After restarting your laptop, you should be able to work on it as usual to run tests. You can run software utilities and built-in tools as initial tests. If your laptop is freezing up so badly that you cant get it to work properly, then you can try using pre-boot diagnostics or take the parts out to test on a desktop computer.

Use A Cooling Pad To Prevent Laptop Overheating
Laptops may also slow down when their processor doesnt function at optimal clock speeds, and that might happen when the laptop heats up and the processor has to lower its clock speed in order to maintain safe operating temperatures. This issue is called performance throttling. When a laptop overheats, its fans work in full swing, and you might hear unusually loud sounds generated by the cooling fan inside the laptop. This is a good sign that your laptop is overheating.
To stop performance throttling, you need to make sure that your laptop is efficiently dissipating heat generated in its internals. Moreover, you also need to make sure that dust isnt blocking exhausts and air vents from where the laptop pushes our hot air. Clogged air vents can pose a big problem.
The best way to avoid laptop overheating is to use a cooling pad. Laptop coolers are meant to provide additional cooling. Fans inside the laptop cooling pad suck in hot air from the laptops air exhaust vents and extract hot air outside. This helps the laptop in staying cool. Also, always keep the laptop on a hard or flat surface so that hot air can exit easily. Uneven and soft surfaces like a blanket, pillow or your lap obstruct the laptops airflow.
For The Computer That’s No Longer Frozen
If the physical computer or virtual machine froze, but is now running in a good state, use one or more of the following methods for troubleshooting.
For a physical computer
Review the System and Application logs from the computer that’s having the issue. Check the event logs for the relevant Event ID:
- Application event log: Application Error, which suggests a crash or relevant system process
- System Event logs, Service Control Manager Error event IDs for critical system services
- Error Event IDs 2019/2020 with source Srv/Server
Generate a System Diagnostics report by running perfmon /report.
For a virtual machine
- Review the System and Application logs from the computer that is having the issue.
- Generate a System Diagnostics report by running perfmon /report.
- Check the system’s history in virtual management monitoring tools.
